Some educators are planning a trip from Cape Town to Durban to attend the Amesa National
Congress from 01 July 2019 to 5 July 2019. They plan to travel via the N1 to pick-up one
colleague in Beaufort West, travel further on the N12 until where it meets the N2 and then
travel further on the N2 to reach Durban.
Study ANNEXURE A in which a map of South Africa is shown and answer the
questions that follow:
1.1 What is the general direction of Cape Town from Durban? (2)
1.2 Name two towns that the educators will pass through when they use the (2)
N2.
1.3 Identify the type of scale used on the map and give one advantage of (4)
using this scale.
1.4 Identify the provinces through which the teachers will travel on their way (3)
from Cape Town to Durban.

1.2 The Fisher family, consisting of the wife, husband and son, plans to spend the
festive season with friends in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and then proceed to
Johannesburg.
• The family will be travelling by car from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.
• The family intends to take a 60-minute break at Mossel Bay.
• They will be departing from Cape Town on a Friday at 08:00 and plan to arrive in
Port Elizabeth at 17:30.

1.2.2 Bar scales are small graphics that indicate the proportions of a map to the original
geographic area and help users measure distances on maps. While scale can be
indicated as a ratio or in words (i.e. 1:10, or “One inch to ten miles”), scale bars
allow users to measure distances in maps directly.
