1.0 Purpose:
This Procedure is intended to provide guidance and instructions for carrying out the I.D Fans Start-up
Operation

2.0 Responsibility:

1. All the personnel involved in carrying out /supervising the above activities are required to ensure
implementation of this procedure and may consult any other relevant documents indicated under
Reference section below.

2. In the event of any changes required in the procedure such changes may be requested with Site
in charge, who would take appropriate action with approval from respective departmental heads.

3.0 SAFETY MEASURES/ CHECKS:

SAFETY CHECKS:

1. All Work permits have been cancelled & Men and Materials have been cleared.
2. Fire fighting system is ready in and around burner area
3. PPE should be worn in local area.
4. All the ID fan auto protections are in service.
5. When the ID fan is started, personnel should monitor the operation locally, keeping close
communication with CCR
6. Technical personnel of relevant specialist must be on duty to ensure the equipment
safety during trial operation before putting into continuous service

4.0 CHECKLIST:
1. Work permit on various boiler areas such as furnace, APH, ID fan, ESP, ducts, gate, etc.
cancelled and men, material removed from these areas.
2. One of the Air Heater is running with its inlet and outlet gate of flue gas path is kept open.
3. One SG DMCW should be in service.
4. Ensure the 11 KV motor supply and both VFD channels for ID fan is ready.
5. Boiler bottom ash hopper & seal trough filled with water.
6. Boiler man holes, peep holes are in closed condition, cooling water charged in Boiler access
doors.
7. Ensure ID Fan lube oil tank level normal. (>60 % in oil tank gauge glass).

8. Charge the lube oil cooler with Cooling Water by opening manual valve & observe the flow
indicator & pressure >3.5kg/cm2.
9. Open the discharge valves for the lube oil pumps.
10. Ensure power supply to LOP is normal.
11. Start LOP from DCS. Check pressure > 4kg/cm2 from local & DCS. Check for any leakage at local
& put other pump on standby auto mode.
12. Ensure Scanner fan is in service.
13. Make ID Fan inlet Guide vane position minimum.
14. Close the ID Fan Inlet & Discharge gate.
15. V.F.D system ‘channel 1 ready’ or ‘channel-2 ready’ signal available (one contact for each
channel).
16. V.F.D system ‘channel 1 start permissive’ or ‘channel 2 start permissive’ available from VFD
system.
17. Fan and Motor bearing temperatures are not very high.
18. Motor winding temperatures are not very high.
19. Emergency push button released from local.

5.0 START PROCEDURE:

1. V.F.D system ‘channel 1 start command starts Fan and runs up Fan to minimum speed (120
RPM).
2. When fan reaches minimum speed, impulse for VFD channel 2 start is given by operator.
When ID Fan ‘A’ is started impulses shall be given for.
3. Opening the inlet gate and outlet gate of fan A.
4. Connecting the regulating dampers / VFD control of Fan A to the auto control.
5. Closing the inlet gate and the outlet gate of ID Fan B and bringing the regulating dampers to
minimum position for the start permissive of the fan and also ensure that fan is not rotating in
reverse direction.
6. Permission to start either FD Fan A or FD Fan ‘B’.
7. Check the motor winding, bearing temperature and vibrations are normal.

6.0 STOP PROCEDURE:

1. Check the motor winding, bearing temperature and vibration is normal.

2. Load of unit to be reduced upto 300MW by running three nos. of pulverizer and deload FD FAN-A
or B and stopped.
3. ID Fan A slowly reduce the IGV/VFD observing furnace pressure, increase the IGV /VFD of ID Fan
B for maintaining the furnace draught.
4. After the normalization of furnace DP and ID fan IGV 0% stop the ID Fan A.
5. Close the inlet and outlet gate.
6. Ensure that ID Fan A is not rotating in opposite direction, if rotating then manually tighten the
inlet and outlet gate.

7.0 ALARMS/TRIPS:
Alarms Trip
0
1. ID fan bearing temperature very high. > 95 C > 105 ⁰C
2. ID fan exciter winding temperature very high. > 1000C > 105 (E)
3. ID fan motor winding temperature high. > 1250C > 1300C
4. ID fan motor bearing vibration very high. > 6.3 mm/sec > 9.9 mm/sec
5. ID fan source breaker -1 electrical trip.
6. ID fan VFD CH-1 fault.
7. Lube oil pressure Low
i. (Low)< 0.6 kg/cm2 (Standby pump start )
ii. (Very Low)<0.4 Trip(incorporated)
8. Both lube oil pumps OFF.
9. ID fan vibration very high. > 6.3 mm/sec > 9.9 mm/sec
10. Furnace Pressure LOW LOW -____mmwc (__ Sec Delay)
-____mmwc (Instant)
Conclusion:
The equipment is to be maintained in the best possible manner. Vibration levels, temperature of the
bearings etc are to be monitored continuously and periodically checked.
