Hypothesis-The larger the force applied on a spring, the larger the extension of the spring
Variables:
● Manipulated: Force, F
● Responding: Extension of the spring,x
● Constant: Stiffness of the spring
Tabulation of data
Initial length of spring,ℓ∘= 20.5cm
Length of spring with load = ℓ
• Extension of spring, x = ℓ∘ - ℓ,
Force = mg(g = 9.81 ms⁻²)

Mass(m/g) Force(F/N) Length of Extension of

spring(ℓ∘) spring,x(cm)
20.0 0.196 22.5 2.0
40.0 0.392 24.5 4.0
60.0 0.588 26.5 6.0
80.0 0.784 28.5 8.0
100.0 0.980 30.5 10.0

Discussion
Precautions needed to be taken so that the spring is not overextended
– Ensure the spring returns to its original length everytime the experiment repeated for
different mass of load.
Precautions needed to be taken to increase accuracy of measurements
– Eye level is perpendicular to the scale of metre rule to prevent parallax error
Conclusion
Do the points plotted on the graph form a perfect straight line?
● Yes the line of graph is a straight line that passes through the origin and all the points
are on the line.
● Thus the force applied is directly proportional to extension of the spring.
● Hypothesis is accepted.
