Lab Test Report – ITT300 Date: <dd/mmm/yy>

1. Introduction

This lab test main objective is to build a UTP console crossover cable or straight-through and
crossovers Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) Ethernet network cables and to test the cable for good
connections and continuity and also correct pinouts such as correct color wire on the right pin.
In this lab test, we will learn to terminate 0.6-to-0.9-meter lengths of CAT 6 cables with RJ-
45 connectors using a complete set of crimping tools and will ensure proper cable connectivity
through cable tester. After the perfect demonstration by our lecturer, we apply the example of cable
cutting, stripping, and also handling the twists within the cable. We also refer to some YouTube
videos for more detailed examples and explanation.
After following the industry standard using T-568A for proper pin configurations, we need to
crimp both of the RJ-45 connectors on both sides of CAT 6 cable. Once the crimping process is
completed, we use a UTP cable tester to guarantee the connection of the terminated cables. The
tester will identify any issues and concern that will allowing us to troubleshoot and precise the issues.
Throughout this lab test, we gained more knowledge and practical insights into the
significance of precise crimping techniques, cable organization, and the importance of testing the
cable for ensuring a reliable and also efficient network infrastructure.

1.1 Recommended equipment used with diagrams

In this lab test, there are 5 main equipment used for crimping network cables, which are 0.6-to-0.9
meter lengths of UTP cable category 6 or 6e, a minimum of four RJ-45 connectors, an RJ-45
crimping tool, wire stripper, and UTP cable tester.

Diagram 1: CAT 6 cable

In Diagram 1, we use a CAT 6 patch cable, commonly known as a CAT 6 Ethernet cable which is a
type of network cable used for connecting devices to a local area network (LAN). It is widely used
in homes, workplaces, and other structures to link PCs, routers, switches, and other networking
devices. CAT 6 cables are typically composed with Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cables, which
are four pairs of copper wires that twisted together to decrease interference and also increase the
signal quality. The wires are enclosed in a plastic jacket that comes in a variety of colors to make
easier identification and cable management.

In Diagram 2, we supplied with 4 RJ-45 connectors and 2 rubber boot protectors. RJ-45 connectors
are typically used to connect one internet-enabled device to another network device. For example,
a PC linked to a server, router, modem, smart TV, game console, or any other device that uses the
Ethernet protocol. RJ-45 connection enables a hardwired connection, which allows for faster
communication throughput, superior stability, and more security. This makes RJ-45 connections
desirable for both professional and personal use. The rubber boot protectors are to secure all of the
wire inserted into RJ-45 so that it will not rip off the wire standard arrangement.

Diagram 3: Crimping tool

In Diagram 3 shows that a crimping tool that we used in our lab test. Crimping tools are useful
devices that allow you to make a secure connection between wires and also the connectors. It
operates by deforming the connection around the wire, leading to an intense connection. Crimping
tools make it easier to combine electrical wires, network cables, coaxial cables and other type of
cables.

In Diagram 4 shows a wire stripper that used for CAT 6 wire. A wire stripper is a hand gadget that
removes the protective covering, or jacket, from electrical wires. By removing the jacket, the wire
stripper allows the electrician to expose the wire for new applications or repairs.

Diagram 5: UTP cable tester

In Diagram 5 shows that a cable tester that we use after we completing both ends of the cables. It
maintains your network working smoothly by detecting incorrect connections, short circuits, and
open circuits. The two-piece equipment may be disassembled for remote closet testing.

1.2 Standard wiring used with diagrams

There are two types of standards used in the networking and telecommunication industries, which
are TIA/EIA 568A and TIA/EIA 586B. These standards specify the sequence of the wires to insert
into RJ-45 connectors. However, in this lab test, we are using T-568A.

Diagram 6: T-568A wiring scheme

For UTP CAT 6 cables, the TIA/EIA-568-A standard provides the following pinout for the T568A
wiring scheme:

2. Construct / Crimping Cable Network

Constructing a cable network, such as a LAN (Local region Network), includes physically installing
and configuring cables to link devices within a specific area. This technique involves the deployment
of cables, connectors and networking devices.

2.1 Obtaining and cable preparation with diagrams

Untwist the four pairs of wires on 0.6-to-0.9 meter length cable by removing the outer covering.
The diagram 7 demonstrates the process of removing the outer coating of the cable with a stripper
and cut the cross-web seperator with same length of the wire that we already remove the outer
cover.

2.2 Preparing and inserting wires into connector RJ45 with diagrams
After straightening the wires, organise them according to industry standards for adequate
pin arrangement. Align them properly and cut it straight using the crimping tool just like
Diagram 10 so that it will fit properly in the connector. Insert the correct configured wires
into the RJ-45 connector as shown in Diagram 11. Our lab test follows the TIA/EIA-568-A
standard wiring layout, as described in section 1.2 above.

2.3 Inspecting, crimping and re-inspect connector RJ45 with diagrams
Inspection, crimping, and re-inspection of an RJ-45 connection include a number of actions
designed to ensure a reliable and efficient termination of network cables.
The first step is to inspect the cable and connection for the damage, appropriate wire
alignment, color-coding standards. Next, during the crimping step, the outside before
inserting the cable into the RJ-45 connector, peel the insulation and untwist the inner wires
to ensure proper arrangement.
The crimping tool is used to tightly squeeze the connector onto the wires, resulting in
a strong connection.
During the re-inspection process, the crimp connection is thoroughly inspected to
ensure appropriate wire seating, color-coding, and no exposed wires.

2.4 Termination of the other end cable
The next step is to terminate the opposite end of the wire using the same procedure as
before.

As before, use a stripper tool to remove the outer coating of the cable, exposing the four
pairs of wires within. Untwist and straighten the wires to prepare them for termination. The
placement of the wires follows industry standards. TIA.EIA-568-A is a standard wiring
system.

The wires are placed into an RJ-45 connectors and aligned with their applicable slots. The
cable and connector are carefully examined for damage and proper wire alignment.
Followed color-coding guidelines.
A crimping tool is used to tightly squeeze the connector onto the wires, ensuring a strong
and stable connection. A re-inspection happens to properly examine the crimped
connection. Ensure appropriate wire seating, accurate color-coding, and no exposed wires.

3. Cable Network Testing
Testing the LAN cable guarantees a solid and dependable connection between devices, crucial for
sustaining constant communication within a local network. Cable testing identifies potential network
performance concern, such as signal decline, crosstalk, and interference.
Testing can identify and resolves faults, improving network performance. Testing also helps
to endure network security. Faulty wires or unsafe connections unauthorized persons or malicious
software may exploit this vulnerability. Regular testing is crucial for detecting and correcting security
problems. In our lab test, we use two ways to evaluate the network cable: cable tester and dynamic
IP.

3.1 Testing cable network using cable tester

Cable testers are devices specifically designed to pin point common issues such as breaks,
shorts, miswires, and other connectivity problems in cables.

Diagram 14: All of the indicator lights lit up

It is essential to make sure that the cable is correctly terminated with connections on both

ends in order to test a cable using a cable tester. After being ready, turn on the cable tester,
keeping in mind that some models might need batteries, while others might require an
additional power source. Connect one end of the cable to the main or master unit and the
other one to the receiver remote unit of the cable tester. The cable tester will then analyze
the electrical characteristics of the cable and will show the result by displayed on the tester’s
indicator lights. This systematic approach ensures a comprehensive evaluation of the
cable’s integrity and functionality. For this lab test, our cable makes all of the indicator lights
lit up.
3.2 Testing cable connection using Static IP (Pc to PC) withdiagrams including setup and
configuration Ips

This testing method involves testing the cable connection between two devices within a
local network, such as two computers or laptops. Each device is manually assigned a
static IP address within the same subnet. There are a few steps that we use to test the
connection cable using static IP:
3.2.1 PC-1
Step 1: Give a name to the computer so that it is easy to identify on the network by
