ALCOHOLS PHENOLS & ETHERS

Account for the following [1 mark each.Previous Board and HOTS]

1. The bond angle in alcohol is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle.
2. The C-O bond length in phenol is slightly less than in methanol.
3. The b.p of alcohols & phenols increase with the increase in the no.of carbon
atoms
4. The b.p decrease with the increase of branching.
5. The b.p of alcohols & phenols are higher compared to other compounds of
comparable molecular mass
6. Alcohols & phenols are soluble in water.
7. Alcohols are very versatile in nature.[give equation to support]
8. Phenols are more acidic than alcohols.
9. Alcohols are weaker acids than water.
10. The relative ease of dehydration of alcohols are ter> secondary> primary.
11. The –OH group attached to the benzene ring activates it towards electrophilic
substitution.
12. O-nitrophenol is steam volatile while p-isomer is not.
13. Bromination of phenol is carried out in the absence of Lewis acis like FeBr 3.
14. Phenol changes its colour on air oxidation.
15. The bond angle in ether is slightly more than the tetrahedral angle.
16. The dehydration of secondary & tertiary alcohols does not give ethers
17. Alcohols have high b.p than ethers
18. Lower members of ethers are miscible in water while higher members are
immiscible.
19. The reactivity of halogen acid towards alcohol is HI>HBr>HCl
20. Alcohols react with halogen acids to forms haloalkanes but not phenol to form
halobenzenes.
21. Phenol is a stronger acid than cresol.
22. O-nitro & p-nitro phenols are more acidic than phenols.
23. O- nitrophenol is more acidic than o-methoxy phenol.
24. Phenols do not undergo substitution of the –OH group like alcohols
25. Alcohols have higher b.p than amines.
26. Phenol has lower dipolemoment than methanol
27. O-nitrophenol has lower b.p than p-nitrophenol.
28. Phenol is acidic while cyclohexanol is neutral.
29. B.p of ethers are lower than that of alcohols.
30. Alcohols are easily protonated than phenols.
