Revision Sheet 13.4 Period of mass spring

Name: ________________________________ Class: ______________________ date: _____________

Question 1: Write the letter of the correct answer in the space provided.

---------1- In a mass-spring system, the period of the motion:

a) is proportional to the square root of the force constant.

b) is inversely proportional to the square root of the mass.

c) is independent of the spring constant.

d) is independent of the amplitude of motion.

----------2- What is the de ining characteristic of simple harmonic motion (SHM)?

a) The motion is constant and linear

b) The motion results from a restoring force proportional to displacement

c) The motion involves random movements in multiple directions

d) The motion is non-repetitive and irregular

---------3- How is the amplitude of a mass-spring system de ined?

a) The total distance traveled by the mass

b) The maximum speed of the mass

c) The maximum amount the spring is stretched or compressed from its equilibrium
position
d) The frequency of the oscillation

--------4- What happens to the spring force and the mass’s acceleration at the
equilibrium position (x=0)?

a) Both become zero

b) Both reach their maximum values

c) Spring force is zero, but acceleration is maximum

d) Spring force is maximum, but acceleration is zero

1
f
f
--------5- What happens to the spring velocity at the equilibrium position (x=0)?

a. become zero

b. reaches its maximum value.

c. reaches its minimum value.

d. can’t be calculated

Question 2: Explain how mass, spring constant and amplitude affect the period of oscillation for
an ideal spring?

The period of a mass oscillating on an ideal spring is proportional to the square root of the
mass, and inversely proportional to the square root of the force constant. The period is
independent of the amplitude of motion.

Question 3: What happens to the spring force, the mass’s acceleration and the speed at the
equilibrium position (x=0)?

At the equilibrium position (x=0), the spring force and the mass’s acceleration both become
zero, and the speed reaches a maximum.

Question 4: What happens to the spring force, the mass’s acceleration, and the speed at
maximum displacement?

At maximum displacement, the spring force and the mass’s acceleration reach their
maximum values, and the speed becomes zero.

Question 5: A mass is attached to a spring with a spring constant (k) of 200 N/m. If the
displacement (x) is 0.05 m, calculate the spring force.

Using Hooke's Law: F = –kx

F = –(200 N/m × 0.05 m)

F = –10 N

(Negative sign indicates the direction of the force is opposite to the displacement).

Question 6: Explain the relationship between the period (T) and frequency (f) in SHM.

Period and frequency are inversely related: f = 1/T.

2
Question 7: If the period of a mass-spring system is 0.5 seconds, what is the frequency?

f = 1/T. , f = 1 / 0.5 = 2 Hz.

Question 8: A horizontal mass-spring system has a spring with a spring constant of 500
N/m. A 15 kg mass is attached to the spring and set into oscillatory motion.

a. What is the period of the motion?

m
T = 2π
K

15
T = 2π
500
T = 1.09 s
b. What is the frequency of the motion?

f = 1/T. , f = 1 / 1.09 = 0.9 Hz.
