evaporate to dryness. Moisten the residue with 3ml hydrochloric acid (specific gravity 1.16), dilute with sufficient hot water
to dissolve all soluble solids and filter through an 11 cm Whatman No. 541 filter paper into an 800 ml squat beaker. Wash
the beaker and filter paper with hot distilled water to a final volume about 500 ml. Complete the determination as
.described under Total Sulphur. Alternatively, if phosphate is absent, use the lead-nitrate titration method described below

Volumetric Method

Reagents

Acetone

Ammonium-dichloracetate buffer; 1.33N ammonium dichloracetate and 0.678 dichloracetic acid. Add 67 ml of dichloracetic
acid to about 250 ml water and carefully neutralise with 10N ammonia solution to litmus. Cool, add a further 33 ml of
.dichloracetic acid and dilute to 600 ml

Nitric acid

0.1M standard solution

.0.5g 11 in acetone. Store in a dark bottle and renew at least weekly
