Lizzo Gets Real About Her Body

Lizzo isn’t holding back when it comes to her body and her complicated
relationship with it. On Dec. 14 the “Truth Hurts” singer faced a backlash after
she shared a video recap on social media of a 10-day smoothie detox she did “to
reset” her body following a trip to Mexico, which some thought was
detrimental to the body-positivity movement she’s prominently embraced. “I
am no different than you—still struggling to find balance, still trying to mend
my relationship with food, my anxiety, my back fat,” the Grammy winner,
32, said in an Instagram video the next day. “I’ve spent my hardest days

Like nearly every family, Richie Sambora
and his daughter Ava encountered a 2020
that was very different from what they
had envisioned. Just months away from
her college graduation, Ava—who made
the dean’s list all four years while study-
ing psychology at Loyola Marymount
University—suddenly found her-
self facing a final semester of online
instruction and a virtual graduation
amid the pandemic. Quarantining at
her rock-star dad’s Laguna Beach, Calif.,
home earlier in the year, Ava was “bummed”
about her unexpectedly quiet last semester,
but Sambora says his daughter kept her pri-
orities in check. “Flexibility is very, very
important at this time, especially for those
of us who are doing well,” says Sambora
over Zoom from his house. “This is a time

writers for the band—he coauthored their mas-

touring, writing and recording, rarely enjoying
any downtime. “My Lord, when I look back and

Going from playing stadiums packed
with screaming fans to overseeing
get-togethers for a houseful of his
daughter’s high school friends was a
welcome change for Sambora. “I love
being a dad more than anything else
anyway,” he says. Even while touring
with Bon Jovi, Sambora would routine-

Sambora was also finally able to put down
roots. “I made my houses beautiful, and I’ve tak-

mine. People feel at home when they come over
to my place because there’s a lot of love here,”
says Sambora. “We make a lot of music here.
There’s a lot of good vibrations going on.” As he

service that included a deployment to Kuwait. He
was a “good old boy” from small-town Oklahoma,
his mother, Kim Wedel, says. “The biggest thing
he got in trouble for was sagging pants—because
he had no hips to hold his pants up.” With a new
car and a new job lined up, he planned to go back
to school on a GI Bill and ultimately work on the
giant wind turbines or oil rigs around Galveston.
But Morales didn’t report to base on Aug. 20, and
the next day his sergeant called Wedel to tell her
that her son was AWOL. “They didn’t believe me
when I said he wouldn’t just disappear, when I said
there’s something wrong,” says Wedel. “They just
wrote him off. . . . They told me, ‘He’s a grown man.

Congress Steps In
“The Army must build back better,” Houston congresswoman
Sylvia Garcia said at a Dec. 9 hearing of the House Military
Personnel Subcommittee. Working with the Guillén family (whose
supporters marched in Washington, D.C., in July, left), Garcia and
the panel’s chair, Rep. Jackie Speier, introduced the “I Am Vanessa
Guillén Act,” which has bipartisan support from 180 cosponsors.
The bill makes sexual harassment a crime in the Uniform Code of
Military Justice, guarantees a confidential way of reporting sexual
crimes and moves prosecution decisions outside the military
chain of command. “This committee will hold the Army and its
leadership accountable,” says Speier.

report was “a hard read for Army leadership.” “I
identified with the young victims in there and
couldn’t imagine . . . how the chain of command in
Fort Hood had failed them so terribly,” McPher-
son tells People. After years of a singular focus
on battle readiness—on training and the main-
tenance of equipment—McPherson says, Army
leaders now recognize they need to “get to know
their soldiers so they can take care of their soldiers
rather than just taking care of their equipment.”
In recognition of the fact that Vanessa’s tragic
death lit the fuse for change, the Army has pro-
moted her posthumously to specialist and is re-
naming the Fort Hood gate where her family staged
demonstrations after her death as Specialist Vanes-
sa Guillén Gate. “They could have said, ‘We don’t
want to be known for this bloodstain,’ but rather
it’s the opposite,” says the family’s attorney Natalie
Khawam. Visibility at the gate, where there will also
be a small memorial to Vanessa, means that “the

was symptoms of the pregnancy.” Thinking she just
needed some rest, Bryan was shocked the next
morning when she looked in the mirror and discov-
ered her left eye was immobile. Then seven months
pregnant, Bryan, with her husband, Jordan Lund-

was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, a condition that
causes temporary weakness or paralysis in the face.
“My husband helped me look at the positive side:

What to Know About
Meningitis
At only 2 weeks old, Sabrina Bryan’s daughter contracted a
dangerous form of meningitis—an infection in the covering
around the brain—that affects about 0.1 to 0.4 percent of
infants less than 28 days old. “Newborn babies are at greater
risk because they are too young to be fully vaccinated,” says Dr.
Elizabeth Murray, a pediatrician at the University of Rochester
Medical Center. If a baby is showing signs of not feeling well—
including sleeping longer than usual or inconsolable fussiness—
Murray suggests a temperature check. Should a baby develop
a fever (anything higher than 100.4°), it’s critical that parents
seek immediate medical care. “Meningitis can be extremely
dangerous, and treatment requires hospitalization for both the
use of IV antibiotics and supportive care,” says Murray. Even
with the proper care, meningitis can have lasting effects
on a child. “The side effects
can range from no long-term Hospital

Ted Danson’s Hot
Streak Continues
Shortly after wrapping his Emmy-nominated
turn as the demonic Michael on The Good
Place, Ted Danson was excited to step into
another, admittedly “similar” character:
retired billionaire Neil Bremer in Mr. Mayor.
“[I went] from the sublime to the
ridiculous,” says Danson, 72. “Both Michael
and Neil are so far over their head, they have
no idea.” The comedy, created by Tina Fey
and Robert Carlock, sees Neil becoming the
mayor of Los Angeles to try to impress his
teenage daughter Orly (Kyla Kenedy).
Danson can relate. “At times I probably
would have been willing to do anything to
impress my daughters,” the father of two
admits. Between that motivation and the
stellar creative team—which also includes
costar Holly Hunter—taking the job was
“a no-brainer,” Danson says. “The best
shot you have of doing something fun is to
find the brightest people in the room.”

Last time I stayed up too late

Probably a late-night poker session
till 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning. I
play a lot with friends who are in
various time zones. I will say it’s
far less about the cards and more
about the hang.
Last dream I remember
I just had the craziest dream:
Tom Hardy was this James Bond
kind of guy, but his day job was
designing suits, and his name
was Herman Merman. I woke up
laughing, like, “Whoa, where did
that come from?”
Last time I was homesick
For the better part of a month I
was in Detroit [for work], and I had
just gotten a little puppy, Murphy,
who’s sleeping in front of my desk
right now. So I missed him for sure.
His whole body wagged when I
walked through the door.
Last guilty pleasure
Think I finished off a pumpkin
cheesecake the other day for
breakfast. Just ate it right out of
the pie pan, didn’t even transfer it
to a plate. It never stood a chance. PATRICK FRASER/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES

Last injury
I cut my ear taking off my mask.
Sometimes it gets caught in my
glasses, and it folded my ear over.
I bled like a stuck pig. It was like,
“Am I really this clumsy? Did I
really just do this to myself?” And
the answer in both cases was yes.
