Description of Skill
24 hour urine collection to check kidney function

CONSIDERATIONS
Indications
A urine test is done to check for the
presence of certain substances that can Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
damage the kidneys.
urinate first thing in the morning and discard.
Mark start date and time. Collect all urine for
exactly the next 24 hours

Outcomes/Evaluation
Client Education
24 hour specimen is completed with no fecal
contamination and kept cool you will need to void in a "hat" discard the first
void of the morning. add all urine thereafter
to the 24 hour container for exactly 24 hours.
do not contaminate with feces and keep
container cool.

not discarding first urine instruct client to collect all urine minus the first urine of

not keeping cool
forgetting to collect some of the urine or spilling some collection should end exactly 24 hours with client
