Day of Music 2024 - Volunteer Job Descriptions

The VSO Day of Music is our gift to the community and we want you to know we could not do it without
you. Thank you for agreeing to volunteer for this special event, the VSO has a huge amount of
appreciation for you.

Volunteer Attributes
You are a welcoming, personable, and outgoing person. You are generally comfortable speaking English
particularly in roles working with the general public. You enjoy interacting with people (general public,
artists, volunteers) to answer questions and provide directions. You work well on your own and enjoy
working as part of a team. You use your ingenuity to solve basic questions and know when to refer to a
supervisor to solve more complex issues.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Ambassador
Working under the supervision of the Ambassador Captain, your assigned duties will include welcoming
people, providing patrons and performers with information on the day’s events, directions to venues and
stages, and other general event info.
Requirements:
You are able to stand on your feet and walk for extended periods of time. You are comfortable
approaching guests to proactively answer questions and provide event information. You enjoy being a
host.

Check-in (Artist and Volunteer)


Working under the supervision of the Volunteer Check-In, your assigned duties will include welcoming
and checking in performers and volunteers, providing them with accreditation badges, and information
on green room & stage locations, as well as other general event info.
Requirements:
You are able to read a spreadsheet to help artists and volunteers check-in and provide information
related to the location of their performance area, volunteer work area, green room, stage manager
contact, and front of house manager contact. You are comfortable calling artists and volunteers if they
have not checked in at the appointed time.

Green Room (Orpheum Lobby or VSO SoM room 315)


Working under the supervision of the Volunteer Captain, your assigned duties will include welcoming
performers and volunteers into the green room / storage area, checking accreditation badges to ensure
only authorized people are allowed to enter, and providing them with information on performance

spaces, scheduling, and other general event info. You will also be setting snacks out on tables, refilling
water jugs, moving supplies from one venue to another, etc.
Requirements:
You are able to maintain the cleanliness of a green room. You are able to assist in the safekeeping of
artist belongings. You enjoy being a host. You are respectful of an artist’s “space” when they prepare for
their performance.

Usher
Working under the supervision of the Venue Captain, Volunteer Captain or VSO SoM Floor Captain, your
assigned duties will include ensuring that patrons flow into venues, managing lineups when venues are
at capacity, crowd control, communicating status with front of house, and providing the public with
information on performance spaces, scheduling, and other general event info including encouraging
guests to donate using the Tap to Donate devices at venue entrances.
Requirements:
You maintain a cool attitude during stressful moments. You are comfortable working with a large crowd
to provide information and direction when needed. You are able to stand on your feet for extended
periods of time. You are comfortable letting patrons know that they may need to wait for other patrons
to leave before they can enter.

Gift Shop Merchandising

Working under the supervision of the Volunteer and Gift Shop Manager. Your duties include welcoming
patrons into the gift shop, assisting customers in choosing items to purchase, suggesting combinations of
items to purchase, assisting in the processing of sales, and keeping the gift shop clean.

Requirements:

You are personable and approachable. You enjoy interacting with customers and helping them choose
items that suit their style/needs. You can ‘sell’ the customers on the quality and price of VSO
merchandise and other gift shop items.

Timeframes

Volunteers shift times range from 3.5 to 5 hours depending on the location.

Event Start Time: 8am

Event End Time: 10pm
