PRESSURE MEASUREMENT TRAINER (LT- 3003) LABTECH

INTRODUCTION:

In many industrial and consumer applications the measurement and

control of physical conditions are very important. Generally, a transducer is
used at the measuring site to obtain the required information easily and
safely. The transducer is a device that converts one form of energy in to
another, In industries pressure measurement, plays one of the most important
of all process of measurement, For example a strain gage when subjected to
pressure (or) force i.e. (physical energy) undergoes a change in its resistance
i.e. (electrical energy). An instrumentation system is used to measure the
output signal produced by a transducer and often to control the physical
signal producing it.

There are Different methods of pressure measurement technique’s are

available. In this trainer electrical pressure transducer technique is used to
measure the pressure of the given tank.

INSTRUMENTATION AMPLIFIER (Signal conditioning)

7
PRESSURE MEASUREMENT TRAINER (LT- 3003) LABTECH

An instrumentation system is used to measure the output signal produced

by a transducer and often to control the physical signal producing it. The signal
source of the instrumentation amplifier is the output of the transducer. Although
some transducers produce outputs with sufficient strength to permits their use
directly, many do not, To amplify the low-level output signal of the transducer so
that it can drive the indicator or display is the major function of the
instrumentation amplifier. In short, the instrumentation amplifier is intended for
precise, low-level signal amplification where low noise, low thermal and time
drifts, high input resistance, and accurate closed-loop gain are required.
Besides, low power consumption, high common-mode rejection ratio, and high
slew rate desirable for superior performance.

SIGNAL AMPLIFICATION UNIT:

Signal amplification unit is used for interconnecting the pressure

measurement trainer with the PC through DAS(Data Acquisition System). The
signal amplification unit is calibrated to a maximum of 5 Volts at a pressure
input of 5 Kg/C m². The user adjustable zero and span adjustments are
provided in this section.

DIGITAL PANEL METER:

A 3 1/2 digit 200m V digital panel meter is used. The output from the
amplifier is a analog DC voltage which is given to the input of the digital panel
meter through external patch connection. This analog input voltage is converted
in to digital output with the help of IC 7107.

PRESSURE TANK SETUP:

The pressure tank is mounted on the base plate . The control valve and
the INLET valve are provided on the tank. Ones BOURDON GAUGE is mounted
on the top of the tank to measure the inlet pressure. The pressure sensor is also
mounted on the top of the tank which in turn connected to the measuring
trainer through a D type Connector. Input pressure is given to the tank through
inlet valve by a foot pump of capacity 10Kd/cm2. It is also provided along with
this trainer. The following diagram shows the entire arrangement of the trainer.

The tank to measure the inlet pressure. The pressure sensor is also
mounted on the top of the tank which in turn connected to the measuring
trainer through a D type connector. Input pressure is given to the tank
through inlet value by a foot pump of capacitor 100kg/cm 2. It is also provided
along with this trainer. The following diagram shows the entire arrangement of
the trainer.

THEORY:

ELECTRICAL PRESSURE TRANSDUCER:

In general, “a transducer” is a device which converts Non electrical

energy into electrical energy. However, in the field of electrical
instrumentation, a transducer is defined as a device Which converts a
physical quantity, a physical condition, or mechanical output in to an
electrical signal.

Most of the method of converting mechanical output into an electrical

signal work, equally well for the bellows, the diaphragm and the Bourdon
tube.

In this conversion, a mechanical motion is first converted into a change

in electrical resistance and then the change in resistance is converted into a
charge in electrical current or voltage.

STRAIN GAUGE PRESSURE TRANSDUCER:

Strain gauge is a passive type resistance pressure transducer whose

electrical resistance changes when it is stretched or compressed. It can be
attached to a pressure sensing diaphragm

10
PRESSURE MEASUREMENT TRAINER (LT- 3003) LABTECH

PRESSURE MEASUREMENT (PRESSURE CELL):

Pressure cells are divisors that convert pressure in to electrical signal

through a measurement of either displacement strain or piezoelectric
response. Diaphragm type pressure transducers with strain gauges as sensor
is used here for measurement of pressure.

This type of pressure transducers uses diaphragm as the elastic

element. Diaphragms are used for low and middle pressure ranges. Strain
gauges are bonded on the diaphragm and the pressure force is applied to the
specimen the material gets elongated or compressed due to the force applied
i.e the material get strained. The Strain in curred by the specimen depends on
the material used and its elastic module. The strain is transferred to the
strain gauge bonded on the material resulting in change in the resistance of
the gauge. Since the strain gauges are connected in the form of wheat stones
bridge any change in the resistance imbalance in the bridge. The imbalance in
the bridge will intern gives out the output in m V proportional to the change in
the resistance of the strain gauge.
