3.5 Backfill and Compaction Section 31 23 00
Ensure that excavations and areas to be filled are free from loose soil, rubbish; untreated
3.5a Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
sabkha and standing water.
The Contractor must take all necessary precautions to ensure stability of adjacent structures.
Place and compact fill against structures, membranes or buried services in a sequence and
3.5b manner that will ensure stability and avoid damage. Filling around pipes and cables shall Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
commence with carefully placed fine material to cover the pipe or cable completely before the
normal infilling is placed.
3.5c Plant employed for transporting, laying and compacting must be suited to the type of material. Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
Differing materials shall be laid separately so that only one type of material occurs in each
3.5d Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
layer.
Where, during the progress of work, the difference in level between adjacent areas of filling
exceeds 600mm, cut into the edge of the higher filling to form benches having a minimum
3.5e Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
width of 600mm and a height equivalent to the depth of a layer of compacted filling. Spread
and compact new fill so as to ensure maximum continuity with the previous filling.
The surface of filling to receive concrete shall be accurately levelled or graded to falls and
3.5f Section 31 23 00 clause 4.4
finished smooth to provide a time base for the concrete work following.
All filling to make up level for floors shall be compacted to 95% Mod. AASHTO density. Sand

free of trash and debris.
Repair and re-establish grades to specified tolerances where completed or partially completed
3.7b surfaces become eroded, rutted, settled, or where they lose compaction due to subsequent Section 31 20 00 clause 3.23
construction operations or weather conditions.
Scarify or remove and replace soil material to depth as directed by Engineer; reshape and
