"Kukaan ei ole sitä ärsyttänyt", kuului taas vihainen ääni. "Se puri
jo toisen kerran, mutta nyt se saakin maksaa sen, Joelle, — eikös
totta vaan, Joe?"
"Kuka se on, joka koiralle kostaa", kysyi hän ja astui ylös kannelle,
koiran jolla näytti olevan syytä varovaisuuteen, seuraten
kintereillään.
"Se olen minä, sir", vastasi Joe Batts, jonka sääressä olevaa
suurta haavaa kokki pesi vedellä ja saippualla. "Koira saa vaan purra
yhden kerran, mutta Rup on nyt jo purrut kaksi kertaa tällä viikolla."
"No nyt tapasin hänet, itse työssä", huusi hän, kun perämies tuli
kannelle. "Minkätähden sinä tämän koiralle annoit?" kysyi hän,
pahan omantunnon vaivaamalta Joelta.
"En, totta totisesti, sir", vastasi Joe. "Miten sellaista olisin voinut
tehdä?"
"No, sitä parempi", sanoi laivuri. "Ellei se ole myrkytetty, niin syö

"No, sitten saa poika syödä sen", sanoi laivuri. "Syö tämä silli,

laivuri.
"En, sir."
"Se kai itse käveli yli kannen ja lopuksi hyppäsi mereen", sanoi
perämies pilkallisesti.
"Kyllä, sir. Clark näki sen tekevän sen, — eikös totta Clark?"
"Ja ellette usko puhettani, sir, niin voitte nähdä vielä lautasenkin,
jonka se nuoli puhtaaksi", sanoi Joe. "Annappas lautanen tänne,
Sam."
"Se on poika, josta kerroin", sanoi laivuri. "Ja muistakaa, että tämä
on merirosvojen laiva."
"Lukuisine merirosvoineen", vastasi perämies purevasti ja katsoi
miehistöä. "Joukko laiskoja, unisia kelvottomia…"
"Tässä on uusi toveri, pojat", sanoi hän. "Hän on tosin pieni, mutta
aine on hyvää."
