I.4. Basic Assumption

Generally the foundation for Tank is block or massive type of reinforced concrete provided with or without
ring wall depend on foundation analysis. Ring wall is used to reduce total weight of foundation. A circular
foundation is more economical than the other shapes because the lateral stiffness is typically the same
for every direction. This is more effective for wind or earthquake loading condition which has uncertainty
direction.
Circular foundation is also effective for a large tank dimension (diameter).
The analysis and design of foundation is based on static equilibrium of external loads including the

selfweights against pile bearing capacity. Pile reactions are linearly distributed along foundation width.

2.5. Earthquake Load ( EQ )

Earthquake load is calculated using UBC-1997 Code Chapter 16 Division IV - Earthquake Design.
Earthquake design parameters are provided in Design Specification as follows.

Seismic Zone 3
Importance factor, I I= 1.5
Seismic reduction factor, R R= 2.2
Soil Profile Type, SD

Zone Factor, as per Table 16-I UBC-97 Z= 0.3

Seismic Coefficient, as per Table 16-Q UBC-97 Ca = 0.36
Seismic Coefficient, as per Table 16-R UBC-97 Cv = 0.54

Design Base Shear as per Chapter 1630.2 UBC-97 :

T = 0.0488*HT0.75 T= 0.412 s

Total design base shear shall be :

Vs = Cv x I x SWt
RxT
= 0.54 x 1.5 x SWt
2.2 x 0.41
= 0.893 x SWt
Total design base shear need not exceed the following :
Vs = 2.5 x Ca x I x SWt
R
= 2.5 x 0.36 x 1.5 x SWt
2.2
= 0.614 x SWt
But shall not be less then :
Vs = 0.56 x Ca x I x SWt
= 0.56 x 0.36 x 1.5
= 0.302 x SWt
Taken :
Vs = 0.614 x SWt
