Navona. Those on the reception floor feature
gilt-framed decor and antique furniture,

four-star has got the lot – sexy decor, an
enviable location, professional staff and a
panoramic roof terrace. Rooms are individu-
ally decorated and they all feel delightfully
decadent with boldly coloured walls, low
wooden ceilings, gilt mirrors and restored
bric-a-brac. The hotel also has 13 apart-
ments, ideal for families.
Gigli D’Oro Suite BOUTIQUE HOTEL €€€

interior design, this classy boutique hotel is
housed in a 15th-century palazzo that once
belonged to Pope Sixtus V. Traces of the orig-
inal building have been left intact so you’ll
find original stone doorways, antique fire-
places and, in the top-floor executive suite,
a low sloping ceiling. Its six suites boast a
chic white-leather look and classy designer
bathrooms.

Quality budget accommodation is thin on
Piazza Repubblica, but this hidden hostel is
a great choice. With its laid-back vibe, cool
staff and bright, airy rooms (doubles and
dorms for three to four people), it ticks all
the right boxes.
Hotel Panda PENSION €

Spanish Steps, in an area where a bargain
is a Bulgari watch bought in the sales, the
friendly, efficient Panda is an anomaly: a
budget pension and a splendid one. The
clean rooms are smallish but nicely fur-
nished, and there are several triples with a
bed on a cosy mezzanine. Air-con costs €6
per night. Book well ahead.
Okapi Rooms HOTEL €

pi occupies a townhouse in a great location
near Piazza del Popolo. Rooms are simple
and small with cream walls, terracotta floors
and double glazing. Some are decorated
with ancient-style carvings, and several have
small terraces. Bathrooms are tiny but spar-
kling clean.
oTown House Fontana di Trevi B&B €€

refined bolthole is within a coin’s throw
of the Trevi Fountain. It’s a stylish choice
with eight dashing rooms spread over two
floors of a typical city centre palazzo. Each
is individually decorated and the look is
contemporary chic with swish trendy fur-
niture, designer bathrooms and handsome
parquet floors.

Daphne is a gem. Run by an American-
Italian couple, it has sleek, comfortable
rooms, helpful English-speaking staff, top-
notch breakfasts and the loan of a mobile
phone for your stay. There are rooms in two
locations – the one off Via Veneto is the pick,
but there’s a second at Via degli Avignon-
esi 20 (Map p86; Via degli Avignonesi 20). Book
months ahead.
