(-0.32 to +0.82 volts), E0/ = 1.14 volts
tạo ra 3 ATP
• Năng lượng tự do:
G/0 = - n . F. E0/
- 2 x (96.5 kJ/volt.mole) x (1.14 v)
= - 221 kJ/mole NADH bị oxi hóa khử
Nhưng 3 ATP = 3 x 31 = 93 kJ được bảo toàn
Hiệu quả = 93/221 = 42% được nắm giữ

2. Vận chuyển thụ động :

Overview of HMP (2)
Functions of HMP
Oxidative phase
• Maintain the high of NADPH/NADP ratio which is
provided to fatty acid biosynthesis (in liver,
adipose, lactating mammary gland).
• Most of steps in this phase are thermodynamically
irreversible.
• Produce ribose 5-phosphate for nucleotide
biosynthesis (DNA, RNA, various cofactor:
NAD+….)
Reversible non-oxidative phase
• Occurring when the cell need more NADPH than
nucleotide excess of ribulose 5-phosphate
series reversible reaction is to produce the
compound to enter glycolysis
HMP is referred to as the shunt
Fructose 6P Glyceraldehyde 3 P
Significance of HMP pathway
• The purpose is to create ATP but un-conventional
(strong growth stage, the ratio of glycolysis and HMP is
2: 1; when the biosynthetic is reduced, this ratio is 10:
1, even 20: 1).
• The most active HMP pathway in requiring NADPH
Mammary glands (Fatty acid synthesis)
Adipose tissue (Fatty acid synthesis
Adrenal glands, testes and ovary (steroid synthesis)
• But It almost absents in muscle tissue.
• It is a common pathway in plants, bacteria and
invertebrates.
Sự phân giải glycogen
(glycogenolysis)
• Glycogen dự trữ trong gan và cơ
• Glycogen ở bắp cơ là nguồn cung hexose
cho đường phân. Glycogen ở gan duy trì
hàm lượng đường huyết trong máu
• Hormone: epinephrine, glucagon

Oxidation of FA
• The major oxidation is mitochondrial β-
oxidation and there are only minor oxidation
belong to α- and ω-oxidation
• FAs are oxidized by most of tissue in body but
are not utilized by brain, erythrocyte and
adrenal medulla for energy requirement
β-oxidation pathway (catabolism of
fatty acid-FA)
• It is in the mitochondrial matrix of hepatocyte
• Beginning with the simple case of a saturated
fatty acyl chain with an even number of
carbons
Purpose:
• Oxidative NADPH for respiration chain ATP
• To provide 2C-acetyl CoA for Kreb’s cycle

• Acetyl CoA is converted to malonyl CoA
• Acetyl CoA and malonyl CoA is triggered to

Metabolism of amino acid (AA) and protein
Nitrogen (N) balance
N balance = intake N (protein) - excreted N (urea)
• N balance = 0 (intake N = excreted N) anabolic and
catabolic pathway are balanced (Adult animals)
• N balance > 0 (intake N > excreted N): new tissue is
being synthesized by the body such as during the
physiological stages of growth and gestation or the
recovery phase following a prolonged illness.
• N balance < 0 N (intake N < excreted N): losing nitrogen
from tissues more rapidly than it is being replaced (old
animal, prolonged illness- renal failure, gastrointestinal
disease- or injury)
Polypeptide smaller peptide
Cholecystokinin
(blood)
Overview of AA catabolism
• Oxidative degradation of AA make the
significant contribution to the generation of
metabolic energy
• 90% of energy requirements of carnivores can
be met by amino acid oxidation, whereas it
just may small fraction of herbivores' energy
needs.
• Most microorganisms can scavenge amino
acids from their environment for their fuel
The circumstances of AA oxidative
degradation
• Some amino acids are released from protein
breakdown and are not needed for new
protein synthesis undergo oxidative
degradation.
• Exceeded dietary protein amino acids
cannot be stored.
• Starvation or uncontrolled diabetes mellitus

Transamination
• It occurs in cytosol of hepatocyte.
• Collecting amino group of many α-amino acid
in the form of the amino group of L-glutamate
molecules.
• The first step in the catabolism of most L-
amino acids
Enzyme of transamination
Enzymes called aminotransferases or transaminases
would be released by cytosol of liver
• Glutamic pyruvic transamination: glutamic pyruvic
transaminase (GPT) or alanine transaminase (ALT)
• Glutamic oxaloacetic transamination: glutamic
oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) or aspartate
transaminase (AST)
The catalyzing aminotransferases are freely reversible,
having an equilibrium constant of about 1.0 (ΔG= 0
kJ/mol).
The prosthetic group of these enzyme is pyridoxal
phosphate (PLP) (precursor as pyridoxine or vitamin B6)
Reaction of transamination

Assay for tissue damage (in reading)
• ALT (GPT) and AST (GOT) are leaked from
injured tissue (heart muscle and liver)
• Measurement of these enzymes associated
with creatine kinase can provide information
of heart damage- SCK test (SGOT, SGPT and
