QURANIC PASSAGES

(One sample for LGS grade 8)

1. Surah Baqarah (2.255):
Allah. There is no god but He, the living, the self-subsisting, eternal. No slumber can
seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can
intercede in His presence except as He permits? He knows what is before or after or
behind them. Nor shall they compass any of His knowledge except as He wills. His
Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and
preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme.

Main themes:

The passage has been taken from Surah Baqarah and is known as the verse of throne. The
main theme of the passage is Allah in Himself, Sovereignty and Tauheed. Allah himself
shows the mankind His Uniqueness by telling us about His Attributes of Lordship, being
the Creator, Independent, Sustainer, Ever living, Omniscient and the Highest Authority
Another theme of Ayat al kursi is Protection against the seen or unseen. Allah is above all
His creations and does not share His Power and Attributes with another being. “He
begets not neither is He begotten” He possesses no humanly qualities. He does not
sleep nor does he get tired. Throne and power related to His Omnipotence is another
extension theme of the passage. “No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all
vision: He is above all comprehension, yet is acquainted with all things.”

The importance of these themes in a Muslim’s life today.

There are attributes that affect humans but do not affect Him, for example, sleep, so we
can rely entirely on Him because He is always there for us. He has the knowledge and
power over all things, this could make Muslims more cautious and beware of their
practices because we know we are being watched all the times, we try and do only the
good practices and deeds. Ayat al Kursi is considered as one of the best passages of the
Qur’an, and Muslims often recite it daily for protection, e.g, before going to bed, before
leaving the house, while travelling, or when one is scared etc. The Holy Prophet (saw)
has said: “If one recites Ayatal Kursi before going to sleep, Allah will send an Angel
to come and look after him and protect him till the morning”
