Methane (gas) is steadily and completely burned with 250% of theoretical air in an adiabatic
combustion chamber. The reactants are supplied at the reference temperature and pressure.
H2O flows in pipes and enters the combustion chamber at 20oC, 500 kPa, and exits at 700oC,
500 kPa. The products of combustion exit from the chamber at 400 K and flow to a chimney.
Determine:
a. Heat transfer which is produced by combustion per kilomole of fuel [kJ/kmol fuel]
b. What is the mass flow rate ratio of the water to the fuel [kg water/kg fuel]?

A reciprocating internal combustion engine is functioned as an air standard Otto cycle. The cycle
process begins with a compression from State 1 to State 2, with p1 = 1 bar and T1 = 32oC. The
compression ratio is 9.24 and the heat addition per unit mass of air is 1393 kJ/kg.
Determine the cycle efficiency.

A special plastic cover is used in a solar collector. The spectral transmissivity is given in
following graph. During the measurement, the solar radiation is incident at a rate of 1000 W/m2
and a blackbody absorber plate is maintained at 27°C. Calculate:
(a) solar flux incident on the absorber plate
(b) transmissivity of the plastic cover for radiation emitted by the absorber plate
(c) heat transfer rate needed to the cooling water in the absorber plate if the plastic cover
temperature is 27°C

Determine the emissivity of gas mixture consisting N2 , O2 , CO2 and H2 O. The temperature of
the mixture is 1200 K, the gas is in sphere with diameter 0.5 m. The partial pressures of gases
are pN2 = 1.0 atm, pO2 = 0.2 atm, pCO2 = 0.6 atm, and pH2O = 0.2 atm
