respectively.
(a) Find the absolute errors of their estimations.
(b) Whose estimation is more accurate? Explain your answer.
(3 marks)
(a) Absolute error of Tim’s estimation

= $214 (1A)
(b) ∵ Tim’s estimation has a smaller absolute error
∴ Tim’s estimation is more accurate. (1A f.t.)

5. Tom uses a thermometer to measure the temperature of a cup of cold water. The result is shown in the
figure.

(4 marks)
(a) Reading = 4.3C (1A)
(b) Scale interval = 0.1C
1
Maximum absolute error   0.1
2

(c) Lower limit = 4.3 – 0.05 = 4.25C (0.5A)

Upper limit = 4.3 + 0.05 = 4.35C (0.5A)
∴ Possible range of x: 4.25  x < 4.35 (1A)

10. Frankie measures his height at the gate of the roller-coaster with a measuring tape as 125 cm. The
percentage error is 0.4%.
(a) Find the maximum absolute error of his measured height.
(b) The minimum height requirement for passengers of a roller-coaster is 125.5 cm. Frankie claims that
he can get on the roller-coaster. Do you agree? Explain your answer.
(4 marks)
(a) Let x cm be the maximum absolute error.
x
100%  0.4% (1M )
125
x
 0.4
125
x  0.5
∴ The maximum absolute error = 0.5 cm (1A)

(b) Upper limit = 125 + 0.5 = 125.5 cm (1A)

∵ Frankie’s height is less than the upper limit (125.5 cm)
∴ He can enter the tent. (1A f.t.)

2 (DG + 9) = 45 (1M)
DG + 9 = 22.5
DG = 13.5 units (1A)

(b) F = (4 , 9 – 13.5) = (4 , –4.5) (1A)

G = (–5 , 9 – 13.5) = (5 , –4.5) (1A)

(c) Area of EFG
