Poetry Compilation
For this assignment, you are going to make a poetry collection. Your poems will be written by
yourself, other poets, and other songwriter/poets. You will also be asked to read one poem
for the class and explain its significance.

A great poetry compilation will be organized around a central theme (things you care about,
love that makes you happy, lasting friendship, etc.) and should have an interesting layout.

Your compilation must include:

● a table of contents page (include the title and author of each poem)
● lyrics for one song
● one poem that you have written (of the four written in class)
● two poems that you’ve found on either:
○ https://www.poetryinvoice.com/poems/senior (senior only!)
○ Poets.org (organized by theme: https://poets.org/poetry-teens)
■ You cannot just use poems from random websites. If you have a poem
from a different site, please check with me.

For each poem (including the song lyrics) you must:

● underline/identify and explain at least five (5) poetic devices used in the poem/song
○ DO NOT simply highlight the examples. You need to show their purpose
● identify the poem’s speaker (not the poet), tone, and theme
● explain why you chose it
● Yes, you do all of this four times. You can use annotations (like we’ve been doing in
class) or find another format.

Dates:
● We will work on this for part of class on Monday, January 25th and Tuesday, Jan. 26th
● Your compilation is due on Wednesday, January 27th
● Poems will be performed starting on Wednesday, January 27th

FAQs:
● What if my song has swear words?
○ As long as there’s some song left after you do this, edit them out by keeping the
first letter and then adding an * for each letter you remove
● Can I do more than one song?
○ No.
