Introduction

Immobiliser
The immobiliser fitted to the current vehicles is a standard electronic device, which protects
the vehicle against unauthorised starting of the vehicle.
In the event that the immobiliser system detects an unauthorised operation of the vehicle,
the engine switches off, the ignition is interrupted and the fuel injection will not take place.
In contrast, when the immobiliser "acknowledges" an authorised operation of the control
units, in turn the vehicle can be started.

Generations of immobilisers

Generations of immobilisers
Immobilisers of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation are fitted to older Škoda models such as
Fabia I, Octavia I, Superb I. In order to meet the ever rising demands for vehicle security,
the currently produced Škoda models feature a new and improved immobiliser system of
the 4th generation.

Differences between the generations of immobilisers

1st generation:
• The immobiliser control unit consists of a separate component that is fitted outside the
dash panel insert.
• The communication between the immobiliser control unit and the engine control unit is
performed via the K-line.
• A fixed code is stored in the ignition key.

2nd generation: Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not permitted

• The communication between the immobiliser control unit and the engine control unit is
performed via the serial line.
• The fixed code sequence of the transponder (FKC) is supplemented by the second
code sequence that is generated on the basis of communication with the immobiliser
control unit.
• The individual data, generated by the immobiliser control unit and the engine control
unit, are used for the communication between the system components.

3rd generation:
Differences to the previous generation:
• The communication between the immobiliser control unit and the engine control unit is
now performed via the CAN data bus.

4th generation:
Differences to the previous generation:
• Compared to the third generation, additional security features have been added.

4th generation - on-line:

Differences to the previous generation:
• If a component of the system is exchanged or supplemented, the adaptation is only
possible through the on-line system FAZIT.

You will find a detailed description of the function of the 1st generation
of immobiliser in the Self-Study Programme No. 9.

4th generation of immobiliser

4th generation of immobiliser

The system ensures an electronic safeguard for the engine control unit and thus the
mechanical access control system is very important.

Specific features

• Different identification of the components

amongst the group makes
- all components of the 4th generation of the
immobiliser (engine control unit, immobiliser,
key) have the manufacturer code for the
vehicle make stored (Škoda, VW, Audi,
Seat), so that no parts of VW etc. can be
used for Škoda vehicles.

• Each version of the engine control unit has

the so-called "Tuning” protection (prevents
the engine control unit being replaced with
a control unit with higher power output).

• New cryptic algorithm for the key and the

engine control unit.
SP87_07
• Encrypted data transfer between the
immobiliser control unit and the engine
control unit during the adaptation.

• The waiting time for the adaptation of the

new components to the system is
5 or 10 minutes (5 minutes for the ignition
key and immobiliser control unit, 10 minutes
for the engine control unit).

Adaptation of the components

Prerequisite for the correct operation of the immobiliser (for example, after replacing one of the
elements) is the mutual adaptation of all system components.
First the engine control unit has to be adapted, which takes over the specific vehicle code
(SKC code) and the password of the immobiliser control unit from the immobiliser control unit
and in return transmits the password for the engine control unit and the blocking code of the
engine control unit to the immobiliser control unit. After checking the correct code for certain
vehicle makes, the keys are adapted (they take over the specific vehicle code from the
immobiliser control unit and the immobiliser control unit takes over the fixed code of the key).

Ignition key

The electronic transponder is integrated in

the ignition key. The transponder is an
electronic transmitting and receiving unit,
which is located in the plastic housing of the
ignition key and which operates without an
internal power supply.
The fixed code, the so-called FKC code or
Fix Key Code (fixed code sequence of the
transponder) and the code for the commu-
nication with the immobiliser, the so-called
SKC code or Secret Key Code (specific
vehicle code - defines the behaviour of the Transponder
immobiliser) are stored in the transponder. SP87_02

The code of the vehicle make (i.e Škoda, VW,

Audi, Seat) is additionally stored in the
transponder by the manufacturer so that,
for example, no VW keys can be used for

Reading coil
Ignition starter switch
The reading coil encompasses the ignition
starter switch, it energises the transponder
located in the key and transfers the data from
the transponder to the immobiliser control
unit.

When the ignition is switched on, the reading

coil is energised by the immobiliser control
unit and forms a magnetic field which is the
energy source for the transponder.
The transponder is activated through the in-
fluence of the magnetic field, the transponder
data are then converted into an electric signal

by the reading coil and are transmitted in this
encoded form to the immobiliser control unit Reading coil
in the dash panel insert.

integrated into the dash panel insert.
The following are stored in the immobiliser
control unit:
- the specific vehicle code SKC
- the password (random digit code) of the
immobiliser control unit
- the code of the vehicle make

The immobiliser control unit compares its

own codes with the codes received by the
transponder and the engine control unit.
When the results match, it instructs the
engine control unit to operate.

4th generation of immobiliser - on-line

4th generation of immobiliser - on-line

The system components of the immobiliser of the 4th generation - on-line are identical to the
4th generation, modifications are made solely in the actual electronics of the system.

Features of the system

• All data of the immobiliser are retrieved from the central database FAZIT via the on-line
connection. There is no data transfer between the control units.

• It is necessary to store all the operations carried out on the vehicle (in connection with the
components involved with the immobiliser system) in the central database FAZIT
(known as "The life of the vehicle").

• Necessary access to GeKo (entry of the user name and the password).

Central database FAZIT

database FAZIT.
FAZIT (Vehicle Information and Central Identification-Tool).
Interventions in the immobiliser system of the 4th generation - on-line, as well as the
replacement of the involved control units can only be made via the on-line connection to the
database.
All the changes to the data carried out during the service remain stored in the database
FAZIT.

On-line data transfer

• On-line enquiry of the database FAZIT by the diagnostic unit is the only way of ensuring safe,
rapid and reliable data transfer to the vehicle.

• All components involved with the immobiliser system must be adapted on-line.

Replacement and adaptation of the system components

When replacing the components, it must be decided how many and which elements of the
immobiliser system should be changed. On this basis, either the adaptation of the new
components or a so-called "New identity of the vehicle" is created.

Adaptation
It is performed in the following cases, if:

– a new vehicle key is added (lost, stolen, damaged key)

– the engine control unit is replaced
– the immobiliser control unit is replaced (dash panel insert)
– the ESCL (ŠkodaSuperb KESSY equipment)

New identity
It is performed in the following cases, if:

– the lock sets for the vehicle are replaced

– The engine control unit together with the dash panel insert are replaced
(in this case, the lock sets must also be replaced).

The "New identity of the vehicle" provides all control units, involved with the immobiliser
system, with new security data from the database FAZIT. These data are also stored in the
database FAZIT.

Adaptation procedure of the components "on-line"

The replacement of the components which are involved with the immobiliser system of the
4th generation or their adaptation can only be performed via the "on-line" connection to the
database FAZIT.

General logic of the "on-line" adaptation via the database FAZIT:

• Data request via the "on-line" connection

• Acquisition of data by means of the diagnostic unit VAS
• Transfer of data to the control unit to be adapted
• Data exchange between the control unit to be adapted and the database FAZIT
• Adaptation of vehicle key
• Adaptation of vehicle key
• Sending the number and the identification of the vehicle keys to FAZIT
The adaptation of the components is After selecting the desired function, the adap-
performed by the diagnostic unit VAS in the tation procedure of the selected component is

4th generation of immobiliser - on-line

Replacement of the system components - examples

1. Replacement of the immobiliser control unit (dash panel insert)

After the adaptation of the new immobiliser control unit by means of access to the database
FAZIT, all vehicle keys must be adapted again.

2. Replacement of the engine control unit

After the adaptation of the new engine control unit by means of access to the database FAZIT,
the vehicle keys must not be adapted.

3. New additional key

To produce the desired slot of the key, a milling machine with access to the database FAZIT is
required (the key will be assigned to the body number of the vehicle). Simultaneously with the
manufacture of the mechanical part of the key, the transponder is programmed and the
information is transmitted to FAZIT.
All new and existing keys must be newly adapted.

4. Replacement of the lock sets (lock with key set)

The lock set is ordered according to the body number. The keys in the set have slots already
made during the production. The transponders located in the keys, with slots produced by a
milling machine with access to FAZIT, are programmed.
Given the new identity of the lock set (new code of mechanical slot), it is necessary in this
case to use the function New identity in order to adapt the other system components.

5. Replacement of all the components

(Dash panel insert with immobiliser control unit, engine control unit, new lock set, ESCL.)

Every part of the immobiliser system has its unique identification code from the production.
It contains the information about the manufacturer, the date of manufacture and the serial
number. This identification code uses FAZIT to identify the individual parts of the system.
