DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9

I. OBJECTIVES:
Content standard: Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of variation and
radicals.
Performance standard: The learners are able to formulate and solve accurately
problems involving radicals.
Learning Competency: Apply the laws involving positive integral exponents to zero
and negative integral exponents. (M9AL-IId-1)

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a. identify the laws involving positive integral exponents, zero and negative integral
exponents;
b. apply the different laws of exponents in simplifying mathematical expressions; and
c. work cooperatively with others.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

B. REVIEW
What was our topic? Joint and combined variation sir.

What is a joint and combined variation? In joint variation, a variable is directly

proportional to the product of two or more
variables.
The statement “ y varies jointly as x and z”
means y=kxz or k=y/xz , where k is the
constant of variation.

In combined variation, a variable is directly

proportional to one variable and inversely
proportional to another.

The statement “ y varies directly as x and

inversely as z ” means y=kx/z or k=yz/x ,
where k is the constant of variation.
Very good!

C. MOTIVATION
Before we proceed to our next topic lets have
first a mini activity called arrange me.

D. DISCUSION
Our topic for today is Zero, Positive,
Negative Integral Exponents
This time it involves the law of exponent
If a and b are real numbers and m and
n are positive integers:
1. Product of Powers - When
multiplying powers having the same base,
copy the base and add the exponents. In
symbols,
am∙an = am + n
a2.a4=?
2. Power of a Power - When a a6
power is raised to another power, copy the
base and multiply the exponents. In symbols,
(am)n = amn
(a2)4=?
3. Power of a Product - When a
product is raised to a power, raise each factor a8
to the indicated power. In symbols,
(ab)m = am bm
(ab)4 = ?
4. Power of a Quotient - When a
quotient is raised to a power, raise the
numerator and denominator to the indicated a4 b4
power. In symbols,

5. Quotient of Powers - When

common base and subtract the exponents. In
symbols,

When exponents m and n are equal, we have
m
a
m . We know that any number or quantity
a
divided by itself is always equal to 1. This
will lead us to the law of Zero Exponents.
When m < n, subtracting them, m - n, will
give us a negative value. This will also lead
us to the law on Negative Exponents.
6. Zero exponent - When a non-zero
number (or quantity) is raised to zero, it is
always equal to 1. Therefore, we write, a0 =
1, a ≠ 0 and (50a)=(1)(a)=a
Examples:
70 = 1 x0 = 1 (5a)0=1
7. Negative Exponents - When a
non-zero number or quantity is raised to a
negative exponent, rewrite the quantity by
taking the reciprocal of the base and change
the sign of the exponent.
