11. • The British mills started focusing on the needs of the war, so imports to 3

• Indian mills now had a vast home market to supply its goods.
• The war needs were also given to the Indian mills to cater to. New mills
were set-up, and the earlier ones were running for a large number of hours.
• New workers were employed, and more and more people were employed as
the demand for cotton increased dramatically.

15. 15.1 Gomasthas were paid servants of the East India Company. Their occupation was 1
to regulate weavers, gather supplies, and look at the nature of material.
15.2 Once an order was placed the weavers were given loans to purchase the raw 1
material for their production. Those who took loans had to handover the cloth they
produced to the gomasthas.
15.3 The new gomasthas were outsiders, with no long-term social link withthe village. 2
They acted arrogantly, marched into villages with sepoys and peons, and punished
weavers for delays in supply - often beatingand flogging them. The weavers lost the
space to bargain for prices and sell to different buyers: the price they received from the
Company was miserably low and the loans they had accepted tied them to the
Company.
16. 16.1 The Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act was implemented in 1972.

16.2 Most recently the Indian elephant, black buck , the great Indian bustard and 1
the snow leopard, etc, have been given full or partial legal protection against
hunting and trade throughout India.
16.3 The government has taken many steps in order to protect Indian wildlife. They 2
are:
1. The Indian Wildlife Act was passed by the government in 1972 for the
protection of plants and animal species.
2. The Act banned hunting and poaching of animals and provided legal
protection to their habitats.
3. The central and state governments have established many wildlife sanctuaries
and national parks in order to protect forests and wildlife.
4. Various projects regarding the conservation of endangered species such as
tiger and one-horned rhino have been initiated by the government.
5. The government, through the introduction of a joint management programme,
has involved local communities in the management of forests.

18. The following measures can be taken to Increase employment in rural areas :

(i) Improve irrigation facilities, so that farmers harvest two or three crops in a year.
Thus, more people can be employed.
(it) More dams should be built on rivers, so that more water can be provided to
small farmers to increase the number of crops grown annually.
(iii) Provide better roads and improve transportation and storage, which will
benefit small farmers and many people will be employed in these sectors.
(iv) Honey collection centres and vegetable and fruit processing units should be
set-up.
(v) More cottage industries and services should be
promoted in rural areas with soft loans and marketing support. Ways to Increase
(i) If credit is provided cheaply and easily, it will encourage the setting up of small-
scale business, or self-employment.
(ii) If educational facilities are improved and schools are set up more jobs in
education line will be created and those educated will also find jobs.
(iii) By improving health facilities, setting up hospitals in rural and urban areas
employment will be generated in the health sector.
(iv) Tourism must be promoted so that ancillary business generated will
bring employment.
(v) Small scale industries must be encouraged and developed.
