Problem Set 3 – Surcharge Effects on Walls due to Strip Loadings

1) Calculate the additional force F acting on the smooth wall due to the strip loading
of 20kN/m2 shown on Figure 1 using

(a) Teng’s (1962) modified Boussinesq equation,


(b) Pappin et al.’s (1986) approach, and
(c) Georgiadis and Anagnostopoulos (1998) approach.
(d) A numerical software tool (e.g. Plaxis)
