Life
Born on April 30, 1651 in Rheims, France Eldest child of Louis de la Salle and Nicolle de Moet de Brouillet Aristocratic family He will inherit the rank and fortune of his parents, which set big gap between him and the poor His father wanted his son to take up law to maintain the family tradition

Life
La Salle insisted the he was called to serve the church At 16, he became a canon of Rheims He studied at Saint Sulpice and the Sorbonne for the priesthood He was ordained priest by the Archbishop of Rheims on April 9, 1678 at the age of 27 As a young priest, La Salle was a model of piety people sought his counsel and put themselves under his spiritual guidance

As an educator
He unconsciously became involved in education little by little In 1679, what began as a charitable effort to help ADRIAN NYEL establish a school for the poor in Rheims gradually became his life's work.
Adrian Nyel was a 17th century French educator. Nyel was a layman who was in charge of the house for the poor in Rouen, France, where he also oversaw the education of poor boys, along with other poorly paid teachers.

As an educator
To be more effective as an educator and formator, he abandoned his family home, moved in with the teachers, renounced his position as Canon and his wealth
Formed a new community of lay religious teachers:

the De La Salle Brothers or Christian Brothers - the first Roman Catholic religious teaching order that did not include any priests

De La Salle was a pioneer in programs for training lay teachers In 1685, he founded the first NORMAL SCHOOL in Rheims (school whose purpose is to train teachers) In the same year, he established a Christian academy (preparatory novitiate) for young men who want to enter the brotherhood (taught the sciences, literature, and principles of scientific pedagogy)

181 years after his death (April 9, 1719) he was declared a saint in 1900 He was made Patron Saint of all those who work in the field of education He was also given the title FATHER OF MODERN EDUCATION De la Salle's pedagogical system is outlined in the The Conduct of Schools, which he composed in 1695, and which is now considered an educational classic.

At present
He wrote also several school manuals, notably The Rules of Good Behaviour and The Duties of a Christian, which proved very popular and went through over a hundred editions.

There are De La Salle schools in 80 different countries around the globe In the Philippines, there are 17 Lasallian Institutions
