CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND EQUATIONS

DIRECTION : Each of these questions contains an Assertion followed by Reason. Read

them carefully and answer the question on the basis of following options. You have to
select the one that best describes the two statements.
(a) If both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of
Assertion.
(b) If both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct explanation of
Assertion.
(c) If Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
(d) If Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct

1 Assertion(A) : Brown fumes are produced when lead nitrate is heated.

Reason (R) : Nitrogen dioxide gas is produced as a by-product due to the decomposition
of lead nitrate.

2 Assertion : The balancing of chemical equations is based on the law of

conservation of mass.
Reason : Total mass of reactants is equal to total mass of products.

3 Take 3 g of barium hydroxide in a test tube, now add about 2 g of ammonium chloride
and mix the contents with the help of a glass rod. Now touch the test tube from outside.
(i) What do you feel on touching the test tube?
(ii) State the inference about the type of reaction occurred.
(iii) Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction involved.

4 (a) In a.............. reaction two or more substances combine to form a new single
substance.
(b) Precipitation reactions produce............... salts.

5 (a) A solution of potassium chloride when mixed with silver nitrate solution, an
insoluble white substance is formed. Write the chemical reaction involved and also
mention the type of the chemical reaction.
(b) Ferrous sulphate when heated, decomposes with the evolution of a gas having a
characteristic odour of burning sulphur. Write the chemical reaction involved and
identify the type of reaction.
6 A student added dilute HCl to a test tube containing zinc granules and made
following observations :
(a) the zinc surface became dull and black
(b) a gas evolved which burnt with a pop sound
(c) the solution remained colourless
(d) the solution becomes green in colour

7 Before burning in air, the magnesium ribbon is cleaned by rubbing with a sand paper to:
(a) Make the ribbon surface shinier
(b) Remove the layer of magnesium oxide from the ribbon surface
(c) Remove the layer of magnesium sulphate from the ribbon surface
(d) Remove the moisture from the ribbon surface

8 Balance the chemical equations

Na2CO3 + HCl —->NaCl + CO2 + H2O
Ca (NO3)2—---> CaO + NO2(g) + O2(g)
KClO3 (s)—-----------> KCl +O2(g)
