CHAPTER I
Introduction

This chapter identifies and clarifies the research problem through the background

of the study, statement of the problem, hypotheses of the study, significance of the

study, scope and limitation, and definition of technical terminologies.

1.1 Background of the Study

The Quezon Memorial Shrine honors the memory of former Philippine President Manuel
L. Quezon and is an important historical and cultural landmark. The shrine is located in
Quezon City and was recognized by the National Museum of the Philippines as a
National Cultural Treasure in 2021.

The 66-meter monument at the shrine was created by architect Federico Ilustre and is
made up of three connected pylons (Giselle, 2021). A museum featuring Quezon's
personal effects, political artifacts, and interactive displays about his life and presidency
is located at the foot of the structure. Moreover, President Quezon and his wife Aurora
have a mausoleum in the monument.

An exceptional chance to fully immerse oneself in Philippine history and culture is

provided by the Quezon Memorial Shrine, a popular tourist destination. Visitor insights
into the leadership and legacy of one of the nation’s most prominent political figures can
be obtained by exploring the museum and taking in the striking architecture.

A phenomenological analysis of the Quezon Memorial Shrine’s visitor experience can

provide important details about how people engage with and interpret this important
cultural landmark. This study tries to investigate the substance and meaning of the tourist
experience at the shrine using a hermeneutic phenomenological method (Zahavi, 2020). It
focuses on the interactions between tourists and the many environmental and cultural
aspects they encounter.

This study will investigate how visitors’ experiences are influenced by their interactions
with the physical environment, exhibits, and other visitors at the shrine by using symbolic
interaction-ism as the theoretical framework (Hyejin, 2016).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

1. What is the lived experienced of the tourist in visiting the Quezon Memorial Shrine?

2. What are the factors that affect their satisfaction at Quezon Memorial Shrine in terms
of safety, security, service.

3. What are the recommendations propose base on the Tourist?

1.3 Assumption of the Study

The study focuses on the experiences of the respondents at Quezon Memorial Shrine. The
following assumptions were made:

1. The researcher assumed that the participants would participate in the interview for the
study.

2. The researcher would be able to have enough participants from a representative group
of tourists who have visited the Quezon Memorial Shrine.

3. The researchers assumed that the participants would provide an honest and accurate
narrative of their experiences at the Quezon Memorial.

4. The researcher would explain the purpose of the study to the participants.

5. The researcher assumed that they are approachable in interviewing their participants.

1.4 Significance of the Study

A Phenomenological study on the tourists experience at Quezon Memorial Shrine

determined the lived experiences of tourists. Hence, the study makes some important
contributions to:

Teachers

This study can be used as a review to determine the quality of Quezon Memorial Shrine's
museum, particularly if they're looking for a place to gather information and teach
students about the life and legacy of President Manuel L. Quezon.

Students

This study may help to find a suitable attraction to visit for educational tours. It may also
provide a perfect place for learning and other educational purposes as the Quezon
Memorial Shrine offers firsthand information

Curators

The recommendations proposed by the researcher and participants in this study can
provide ideas to enhance the Quezon Memorial Shrine. By offering this recommendations
to Curators, the Quezon Memorial Shrine may become a popular place for cultural and
historical landmark dedicated to President Manuel L. Quezon.

Tourist

Through this study, tourists will gain real-life experiences at Quezon Memorial Shrine
which may serve for them as a review to consider whether it's a destination they would
like to visit during their travels.

Community

This study may promote Quezon Memorial Shrine, which makes the destination popular
for tourists and may improve their economic growth. It may also allow the community to
come up with ideas to enhance their popular landmark through the proposed
recommendations by participants and researchers in this study.

Future researchers

This study may provide a source of information to be used for their study. This may also
become their literature review if they're going to conduct something related to this study
and also an opportunity for them to refine and expand this study.

1.5 Scope and limitation

This research focuses on finding out the primary factors that influence tourists experience.

We, the researchers will interview 10-25 tourists of Quezon Memorial Shrine and their

experience will be used as reference in finding out tourist's overall satisfaction in Quezon

Memorial Shrine.

This study is to identify the key variables influencing visitors' experiences in safety and

security, quality of service. This research will study tourist's experience to determine what

positive and negative experience they had visiting Quezon Memorial Shrine. This study

will focus only inside of Quezon Memorial Shrine; Therefore, the tourists spots nearby the

shrine is not included in the location of the study.

CHAPTER II
Methodology

This chapter describes and discusses how the researchers will gather the

necessary data and information that will be used in the entire research. It presents

who are the respondents and the focus of the research. This section shows the

procedure and source of data and methods in collecting the data, allowing

readers to evaluate the reliability and validity of the research.

2.1 Research Design

The research method used by the researchers is qualitative research with a

phenomenological approach. Phenomenology was a philosophical work by Edmund

Husserl that aims to study how individuals experience a phenomenon to determine the

underlying meanings and structures of their experiences. Phenomenological research starts

with an open mind and seeks to understand the phenomenon from the perspective of those

who have experienced it. Researchers cooperate with in-depth interviews, focus groups, or

observations to gather rich data from the participants. The data from the participants often

appears as narratives, descriptions, and reflections, allowing the researchers to discover

the intricate layers of human consciousness. Phenomenology must apply epoché to

suspend the researcher’s personal biases and immerse themselves in the perspective of

participants (Dr. Ashutosh Gaur, Ph.D. (Management), 2023)

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 8

ST I COLLEGE ORT IGAS -C AI NT A

The researchers used a phenomenological research design to find people's perspectives

during their visit to Quezon Memorial Shrine and also their observations of their

surroundings. In order to find proper data, the researcher used semi-structured interviews

with the participants. A semi-structured interview is a combination of structured and

unstructured interviews. When it comes to semi-structured interviews, researchers have a

predetermined or planned questionnaires for the participants, while others aren't planned

since they are follow-up questions (George, 2024). As stated earlier, researchers kept the

epoché applied throughout the whole process of interviewing and this study. Therefore,

the chosen design was appropriate and aligned through our objectives.
