SPECIAL DETAILED INSPECTION OF THE ENGINE MOUNT SHAFT

1. General

A. Function
(1) The inspection procedure is used to detect surface cracks on the thrust shaft on the
engine’s aft mount at FS672.00, BL70.606.
(2) This data applies to both sides of the aircraft.
NOTE: This inspection is to be performed after the removal of the power plant and
the engine aft−mount thrust shaft.

B. Reference Information
(1) For additional data that is necessary to do this inspection, refer to the manuals that
follow:
− Nondestructive Testing Manual (NDTM) Part 1, General, 51−20−08
− Structural Repair Manual (SRM)
− Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM).

C. Location
(1) The engine aft−mount thrust shaft is found in Zone 430/440 (Refer to Part 1,
51−01−03).

D. Access
(1) It is necessary to remove the engine aft−mount thrust shaft from the engine to do
the inspection.

E. Part Examined in This Procedure

Refer to Table 1.

4. Preparation and Cleaning

A. Prepare for inspection of the engine aft−mount thrust shaft as follows:
Refer to Figure 1.
(1) Remove the engine aft−mount thrust shaft (Refer to AMM Task
71−22−03−000−801).
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A GOOD FLOW OF CLEAN AIR AND
SUFFICIENT FIRE PROTECTION. USE APPROVED BODY PROTECTION
WHEN YOU USE SOLVENTS. ALL SOLVENTS ARE POISONOUS AND
SOME ARE FLAMMABLE.
(2) Clean the parts to ensure no grease or dirt remains that might interfere with the
penetrant inspection. (Refer to Part 1, 51−20−08 for cleaning requirements.)
(3) Visually inspect the engine aft−mount thrust shaft for damage prior to penetrant
inspection.
(4) Dry the engine aft−mount thrust shaft with dry, clean, lint−free cloths.

5. Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection of the Engine Aft−Mount Thrust Shaft

A. Application of Penetrant
NOTE: The following procedure must be done in an ambient temperature of 40−120 °F
(4−49 °C).
NOTE: The inspection is to be performed in accordance with Part 1, 51−20−08, for
Method D, Type 1.
(1) Make sure that the inspection surface is clean and dry. Apply the fluorescent dye
penetrant using Method D, Type 1, to the inspection area. The penetrant shall
remain on the part (dwell time) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
NOTE: Do not let the penetrant dry on the part. If necessary, apply more
penetrant to keep the surface wet.

B. Removal of Excess Penetrant (Method D)

(1) After penetrant dwell time, remove the hydrophilic post emulsifier penetrant by first
removing bulk penetrant with a water pre−rinse, followed by an application of the
hydrophilic emulsifier, and finally by a post−rinse.
(2) Apply the water pre−rinse for the minimum amount of time required to achieve
removal of bulk surface penetrant (Refer to Part 1, 51−20−08).
(3) Apply hydrophilic emulsifier by immersion, flowing, or spraying. For immersion
application, the concentration, percent volume, must not be higher than what is
specified by the penetrant system supplier. The concentration must not exceed the
level for which the system was qualified. For immersion applications, the emulsifier
or part must be mildly agitated. Dwell time must be the minimum required for
adequate surface penetrant removal, but must not exceed 2 minutes. For spray
applications, the concentration must not exceed 5 percent.
(4) Apply the water post−rinse to the part being examined after the application and
dwell of the hydrophilic emulsifier on the component being examined (Refer to Part
1, 51−20−08).
(5) Use the black light lamp during the cleaning operations to ensure that all bulk and
excess penetrant is removed from the component prior to drying and inspection.
NOTE: If the emulsifier dwell time exceeds 2 minutes, the component must be
cleaned, dried, and reprocessed.
CAUTION: OVER−REMOVAL OF THE SURFACE PENETRANT SHALL REQUIRE THAT
THE COMPONENT BE CLEANED AND REPROCESSED. A GOOD
INDICATOR OF OVER−WASH OR OVER−REMOVAL OF THE SURFACE
PENETRANT IS EVIDENCED BY THE TOTAL LACK OF RESIDUE THAT MAY
OCCUR ON ALL OR A SPECIFIC AREA OF THE PART, WHEN INSPECTED
UNDER BLACK LIGHT DURING THE REMOVAL CYCLE AND/OR IN THE
INSPECTION STATION AFTER DRYING.

C. Drying Parameters
(1) The component must be dried prior to the application of a Form a−dry powder
developer (Refer to Part 1, 51−20−08).
NOTE: High temperatures and excessive drying times adversely affect penetrant
sensitivity.

D. Application of Dry Developer (Form a)

(1) A component requiring examinations must be dry before application of the
developer. Dry developer must be applied in such a manner that the developer
contacts all surfaces that are to be inspected. Excess dry developer may be
removed after the development dwell time by light tapping, or with light (filtered) air
pressure not exceeding 5 psi (35 kPa). The minimum developer dwell time must be
10 minutes and the maximum developer dwell time must be 60 minutes prior to
inspection.

6. Inspection of the Engine Aft−Mount Thrust Shaft

Refer to Figure 1.
A. Inspect all surfaces of the engine aft−mount thrust shaft for cracks.
EFFECTIVITY: SEE PARAGRAPH 2 Part 8 Page 3
71−21−104 Mar 10/06
C
NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING MANUAL
Part 8 − Penetrant
CRJ200

(1) The inspection is to be performed under proper white light and black light
requirements (Refer to Part 1, 51−20−08).
NOTE: Components not inspected before the maximum development time shall
be cleaned and reprocessed.
Cracks show as lines or a linear set of small points.
If, during the inspection, the developer shows excessive background
fluorescence because of poor removal of the penetrant, the complete
inspection procedure must be repeated.

7. Acceptance or Rejection Criteria

A. Any crack indications are cause for rejection.
B. Record and report results in accordance with company guidelines and policies.
C. For indications that exceed the allowable limits, it is recommended that you contact
Bombardier Aerospace, Regional Aircraft, Customer Support (refer to SRM 51−13−01).

8. Post Inspection Cleaning

A. Remove developer residues as follows:
(1) Dry developer (Form a) with filtered compressed air.
NOTE: All components must be cleaned within 4 hours after the developer is
applied.
NOTE: Vapor degreasing is not recommended. The residue may become baked
on the surfaces of the component.
(2) After the penetrant and developer are removed, inspect the component under proper
blacklight and white light conditions to ensure no developer or penetrant residues
are present. If any penetrant or developer residues remain, repeat the cleaning
procedure until all traces are removed.

9. Close−Out
A. Reinstall the engine aft−mount thrust shaft (Refer to AMM Task 71−22−03−400−801).
B. Remove all tools, equipment, and unwanted materials from the work area.
