ATA 57-00 WINGS
The wings are constructed as three major parts. The left and right wings
and a centre section which, with the exception of the top skin, forms and
integral part of the fuselage.

INTRODUCTION
Left and right wing attachment to the fuselage is by dual loadpath links at
wing rib No. 2 and connecting the spars directly to frames 26 and 29. The
attachments are faired off with wing root fillets which are screwed in
place. The wings are sealed between ribs 2 and 18 on each side to form
integral fuel tanks. A further integral fuel tank is formed in the centre
section by sealing between ribs 2 left and right. The two remaining
sealed compartments in each wing at ribs 18 to 20 are used as
surge/vent tanks for the fuel system.

Thiokol is used as a jointing sealant during assembly to ensure a leak
proof fuel storage unit.
DESCRIPTION
Internal anti-corrosion is by chromic acid anodic treatment and finished
with chromate enriched epoxy primer.
MAIN WING
The primary structure forms a box beam extending from the root (rib 2) to :
the wing tip fairing. This box beam comprises front and rear spars and
top and bottom skins supported by ribs.
The front and rear spars are single piece integrally machined with ”T”
section flanges. Fail safe integrity is achieved by a horizontal crack
retarder on each spar web, and by use of an additional tension member
attached to the bottom skin.
The spars are joined to the centre box spars at the rib 2 position to
provide a 15 degree wing sweep back. The joint is butted and riveted
through a preformed doubler plate.
The top skin is a single piece panel extending from the fuselage centre to
the top wing tip. It is machine milled and of reducing thickness from root
to tip. It is stiffened by bonded closed section stringers, three of which
serve as fuel system vents.
The top skin extends behind the rear spar to a rib supported flap shroud
which carries the wing primary and secondary controls. The bottom skin
is a single piece panel extending outboard from rib 2 to the lower wing
tip. It is machine milled and of reducing thickness from root to tip.
Located in the skin are non-load carrying manhole covers for access to
the wing box. The panel is stiffened by bonded ”I” section stringers. At
the rib 2 position the skin is riveted and bolted to the centre section lower
panel, and is reinforced by finger plates and a butt strap.
The skin panels are supported on integrally machined ribs from rib 0 to
rib 20.

CENTRE SECTION
A cut-out between frames 26 and 29 is built up as a torsion box. Its lower
panel is riveted and bolted to the front and rear spars which are joined to
the fuselage frames.
The centre section contains rib 0 and the left and right wing ribs 1 and 2.
Rib 0 also serves to carry the butt joint for the top wing skins. Two
diagonal bracing struts are fitted at each rib 1 position.
Access to the torsion box is through two manholes in the front spar
between ribs 1 and 2 left and right. The left and right top wing skins
extend from rib 0 to rib 20 and the lower skins extend from rib 2 to rib 20.

ATTACHMENT FITTINGS
The wing leading edge structure, forward of the front spar, is a three
piece ’D’ section ribbed assembly attached by high torque screws. The
structure carries piccolo tubes for hot air anti and de-icing. The portion of
the leading edge immediately above the pylon positions incorporates
spring loaded doors to allow the escape of excess pressure in the event
of a leak in the air system.
Panels are provided for access to equipment and attachments mounted
on the front spar.
The wing tip assembly, outboard of rib 20, is attached by quick release
fasteners for ease of maintenance.
Engine pylons are mounted in line of flight and intersect wing ribs 6 and
10. Pylon front mountings are attached to the front spar, the rear
mountings are attached to the wing rib through the bottom skin. Pylon
rear mountings also provide the front mounting for flap tracks 2 and 3
mounted in line of flight behind the pylons. Flap track 4 is attached to rib
14 through the bottom skin. All three flap track rear mountings are
attached to the wing bottom skin extension aft of the rear spar. Flap track
1 is attached at the rib 2 position and the extension of the top wing skin
behind the rear spar. The flaps are attached to carriages mounted on the
tracks.
Ailerons are hinged to ’A’ frame mountings attached to the rear spar
outboard of wing rib 16.
Three lift spoilers on each wing are hinged to brackets mounted on the
trailing edge fixed flap shroud from rib 2 to outboard of rib 12.
Roll spoilers are hinged to brackets mounted on the fixed flap shroud
outboard of the lift spoilers.

AILERONS
Manually controlled, aerodynamic, mass balanced ailerons are mounted
outboard of rib 15, with hinge mountings to brackets attached to the wing
rear spar at ribs 16, 18, and 20. Gust damper and aileron interconnect
attachments are installed in the vicinity of the inboard hinge.
Two tabs are mounted on each aileron trailing edge at the rear spar. The
inboard (servo) tab has two mounting brackets, and the outboard (trim)
tab has four. Operating mechanisms for the tabs protrude through the
aileron bottom skin aft of the front spar, and are shrouded.
The servo tab provides the aerodynamic deflection which operates the
aileron, and is stop limited to give direct aileron movement by the control
column handwheel
Each aileron is of two spar ribbed construction supporting top and bottom
skins. Access panels and drain holes are provided at strategic points in
the bottom skin, and balance weights are built in to the structure
outboard of the centre hinge, forward of the front spar, and in the horn.
Three static dischargers are attached to the trailing edge outboard of the
trim tab.

SPOILERS
The lift spoilers are hinged to the trailing edge of each wing fixed flap
shroud. Spoilers are of bonded honeycombed structure supporting top
and bottom skins, with a front spar and riveted trailing edge seal. Three
hinge assemblies are attached to each spoiler, and mate with hinge
bracket attachments mounted on the rear spar at wing rib positions 3 to
11.
Male and female stops, mounted on the facing surfaces of the centre and
outer spoilers interlink to ensure operation of both spoilers in the event of
a malfunction of a control jack or linkage.
