ATA55-00 STABILIZERS

INTRODUCTION
The stabilizers comprise:
• vertical stabilizer and left and right elevators.
• horizontal stabilizer and single rudder.
The vertical stabilizer is mounted on the tail fuselage at frames 45 to 47
and 48 to 50. The rudder is attached to hinge brackets bolted to the
vertical stabilizer rear spar.
The horizontal stabilizer is mounted on top of the vertical stabilizer. The
elevators are attached to hinge brackets bolted to the horizontal stabilizer
rear spar.
Fairings enclose the horizontal/vertical stabilizer attachment, and a rear
fairing encloses the elevator control mechanism. Shrouds cover the gaps
between horizontal stabilizer/elevators, and vertical stabilizer/rudder.

DESCRIPTION
HORIZONTAL STABILIZER
The horizontal stabiliser is a one piece symmetrical unit rigidly mounted
to the vertical stabiliser. It comprises ribs, stringers, front and rear spars,
top and bottom skins, leading edge member and tip.
The top and bottom stringers are bonded to the skin and drain holes are
provided in the trailing edge hinge area.
The leading edge of the horizontal stabiliser carries piccolo tubes for hot
air anti-icing.
Two reversible lifting eyes are provided for use during rudder removal
and installation. They are located at each rib 2 on the lower skin surface.
Each elevator is hinged to four brackets mounted on the rear spar.
On the left and right of the centre line 10 machined brackets are provided
for attachment to the vertical stabiliser.
The tip fairings are of fibre glass and are screwed and bolted in place.

ELEVATORS
The left-hand and right-hand elevators are of conventional design and
are of all metal light alloy construction.
Mass balance is achieved by set-back hinges and mass balance weights,
and aerodynamic balance by a ballasted horn at the outboard ribs of
each elevator.
Each elevator is independently mounted to the horizontal stabilizer by
four hinge brackets and carries a trim tab and a servo tab on its trailing
edge.
An elevator consists of a two spar, ribbed structure supporting top,
bottom and leading edge skins. The skins are chemically etched during
manufacture to combine maximum skin strength with minimum weight.
Six shrouded hinge brackets mounted on the rear spar support the tabs,
three for the trim tab and three for the servo tab.
Five static discharge wicks are installed on the outboard end of the
elevator with an additional static discharger mounted on the trailing edge
of the trim tab.
Access panels are provided in the lower skins of the elevator to ease
fitment and lubrication. Drain holes are provided at strategic points in the
lower skins.
Each elevator is provided with two reversible lifting eyes for use during
removal and installation.

The upper fin fairing is made of fibre-glass and bolted to the top of the

outlet louvers on both sides.
Closed section stringers are bonded to the two skins, which are riveted to
the front and rear spars and horizontal open section ribs. Diagonal
bracing struts are riveted between the ribs.
The line of the skins is carried aft of the rear spar in the form of panels to
provide a rudder shroud. On the left hand side, the bottom shroud panel
is hinged at the front and is secured with quick release fasteners. The
remaining panels are fixed. On the right hand side, three panels are
hinged and have quick release fasteners.
Ten mounting brackets for attaching the horizontal stabiliser are riveted
to the top rib and skins.
The rear spar is one piece and straight. It is bolted and riveted to frame
50 and follows the line of that frame. The spar carries the rudder gearing
unit mechanism and four ’A’ frame brackets for the rudder hinges.
The front spar is made up of two pieces which are bolted and riveted
together. The lower piece is bolted and riveted to frame 45 and is angled
to provide stabiliser sweepback.
Located at the bottom of the ’D’ section leading edge is the ram air intake
which feeds air to both air conditioning pack heat exchangers. The
leading edge also carries the hot air ducting for the horizontal stabiliser
anti-icing.
Note: If an HF system is installed, the vertical stabiliser leading edge is
made of composite material instead of metal.

RUDDER
The rudder assembly is a one piece, conventionally designed, all metal,
light alloy construction. It is comprised of a front spar, 36 closely pitched
ribs, left and right skin panels and a trailing edge member.
The left and right skin panels are chemically etched during manufacture
to give strengthened areas around the lower hinge points while achieving
minimum panel weight.
The rudder is attached to the vertical stabilizer by four hinge brackets,
which are shrouded by the stabilizer shrouds, and controlled by
conventional interconnected rudder pedals. The rudder pedals are
connected by rods and cables to two independent hydraulic actuators
that connect to the rudder at ribs 5 and 5A.
Two reversible lifting eyes are positioned aft of the centre hinge for use
during removal and installation of the rudder.
