injection.
-The skin contains numerous nerves be
careful during selection of the site to avoid
injury to these areas.

-The knowledge of the anatomy and

physiology of the body is essential for the
safe administration of the injection.
-If carelessly given, injection are means of
introducing into the body.

2. MICROBIOLOGY:-

-Wash hands thoroughly before and after the

procedure to avoid cross infection.

-Articles required for intravenous infection

should be sterile and it should be sterilized by
autoclaving.

3. BIOCHEMISTRY:-

-Drugs that change the chemical composition

of the blood will endanger the life of the
patient if not used cautiously.

-Once a drug is injected it is irretrievable.

4. PHARMACOLOGICAL:-

-Nurse must know about the antidote and

bioavailability of the injectable drug.

5. PSYCHOLOGY:-

-Explain the procedure thoroughly to the

patient to win the confidence and get the co-
operation.

-Proper positioning will help to relax the

patient while intravenous injection.
-Maintain privacy if required.

RATIONALE:- Ensure that the right
procedure is done for right patient.

2.Identify the patient.

3.Prepration:- It include

a) Preparation of self:-
-Perform hand hygiene.
-Put on gloves.

b) Preparation of articles:-
-Arrange all the articles in clean tray.
-Take needles and syringes as required.

c) Preparation of patient:-
-Inform the patient and explain all procedure
to patient.
-Provide proper position to patient i.e. sitting
or lying position.
-Explain the patient that movement of the
extremity should be minimal.

c) Preparation of environment:-
-Provide calm environment.
-Maintain adequate lighting in room.

Nursing action during procedure:-

4. Select appropriate syringe and needle and

check whether they are in good working
order.
RATIONALE:- To check the working
condition.

5. Recheck the order, medicine card with the

label of the medicine, expiry date, etc.
RATIONALE:- To avoid medication error.

6. Mix well with appropriate solvent and take

out the required amount of solution in the
syringe.
RATIONALE:- To dilute the medication.

7. Apply a tourniquet on the upper arm. ask

the patient to clench and unclench the hand.
RATIONALE:-It will make the vein more
prominent.

8. Pull the skin taut and Place the needle in

line with vein at a 15 to 45 degree angle.
Insert the needle a bit below the point where
the needle will pierce the vein.
RATIONALE:- The vein may roll away so it is
important to taut and stabilize vein.

9. When the back flow of blood occurs into

the syringe release the tourniquet and inject
the medicine very slowly.
RATIONALE:-

10. Pressure with swab at the puncture site

after the needle is withdrawn.
RATIONALE:- To prevent bleeding.

11.Apply band aid/adhesive tape on the

puncture site.

12. Maintain medication chart.

13. Ask the patient to take rest at least 15 to
30 minutes so that you can observe him for
any reaction.
RATIONALE:- If any reaction will happen
then immediately report to the physician.

18.Dispose the needle and syringe in

appropriate containers.
RATIONALE:- To avoid spread of possible
blood borne diseases.

21.Replace the tray with the reusable articles

in proper place.

injection.
c) state purposes of intravenous
injection.
d) explain types of access for
intravenous injection.
e) discuss advantages and
disadvantages of intravenous
injection.
f) describe the scientific principles of
intravenous injection.
g) enlist articles needed for intravenous
injection.
h) demonstrate procedure for
intravenous injection.
i) list down the complication for
intravenous injection.
CONCLUSION:-
This topic helps student to improve
their practical skill as well as knowledge
regarding intravenous injection and helps to
apply this skills in clinical practice.
