Assignment 2: TCA

Question 1

During a consultation for colour or bleaching one may identify limiting factors or contraindications.
In your own words discuss factors and give reasons for each of the following

a) 3 limiting factors
b) 2 contraindications

a) The three limiting factors are the temperature, the client’s skin tone and length of the hair.

- High temperatures can cause the hair cuticles to open which can cause colour molecules to fade
more quicker and the heat can dry the hair making it more prone to damage and color loss.

- The client’s skin tone is used to identify what hair colour goes well with their skin color. The hair is
next to the face so choosing the right color is important for the client to look good.

- The hair length determents how much of the product (colour or bleach) we need to mix before
applying it on the client.

b) The two contraindications are allergic reactions and exsisting cuts/stratches/broken skin.

- It is best to prevent using the harsh chemicals of colour/bleach treatments when the client has cuts
or any lesions on their scalp because this can cause more damage to the scalp.

- The client can have an allergic reaction to the treatment and therefore a skin test is ideally done
before the treatment.

LO1 - -1.3 – 5marks

Question 2

Identify in detail 4 different types of colours and how each effect the hair structure.

 Temporary colour
 Semi-permenant colour
 Quasi colour
 Permenant colour

Temporary dyes are direct dyes that are made up of large colour molecules that sit on the hair cuticle. These
molecules are too large to penetrate the cortex and are removed after one to five washes depending on the
hair porosity.

Semi-permanent colour effects the structure of the hair by attaching to the cuticle layers. But the colour
molecules are too big to go into the cortex fully and too small to be completely washed away with very few
washes.

The quasi colour is mixed with a low strength developer. It is more gentle on the hair structure because it
does not penetrate deep into the hair shaft. The colour molecules enter the cortex but does not change it
greatly.

Task 2

The permanent colour has small molecules that go through the cortex and change their colour when they are
mixed with the hydrogen peroxide. The small molecules are oxidised to form large colour molecules (which
grow and become trapped in the cortex) that are too large to escape this creates a longer lasting change in
hair color.

a) How bleach effects the hair structure.

Bleach breaks down the pigment molecules in the hair shaft which causes them to loose their natural colour.
Bleach also can strip the hair of it’s natural oils, leading to dryness, damage, frizz, split ends and lack of
moisture of the hair.

LO2 – 2.2 – 5mks

Question 3

a) Define the international colour chart

b) Define the natural colour pigments
c) Define not less then 4 steps needed to achieve a target colour when using the ICC chart

a) The international colour chart is a numerical system that is used worldwide to classified hair color and
identify differences between the colour depths and tones.

b) The colour of the hair is determined by the amount of pigment it contain. The natural hair pigment is
found in the hair shaft called the cortex layer. White hair does not contain pigment, hence, does not have
colour. Hair that contain black and brown pigment is called eumelanin whilst phomelanin refers to hair
that contain red and yellow pigment. Coloured hair, whether light or dark, and whether it has warm or
cool shades can be described by the levels and tones respectively

c)
o Compare the colour chart with the client’s current hair to match.
o Check client’s skin tone to ensure the ideal colour that compliments the client’s hair colour.
o Check the percentage of white hair.
o Check the hair texture to confirm whether it is straight, wavy or curly.
o Check the hair length to confirm whether it is short, medium or long to determine how much of
the colour is needed prior application.
