Fluid Mechanics (ME-203), Assignment No: 4

Q.1. The pipe flow (Fig. 1) fills a cylindrical tank as shown. At time t= 0, the water depth in the
tank is 30 cm. Estimate the time required to fill the remainder of the tank.

Q. 2. An incompressible fluid flows past an impermeable flat plate, (Fig. 2), with a uniform inlet
profile u=Uo and a cubic polynomial exit profile as follows:
 3   3  y
u  U0   Where  
 2  
Compute the volume flow Q across the top surface of the control volume.

Q. 3. A jet of oil (RD=0.80) issues from a nozzle of 15 cm diameter with a velocity of 12 m/s
(Fig.3). A smooth cone with vertex angle of 900 C deflects the jet. The jet is horizontal and the
vertex of the cone points towards the jet. Calculate the force required to hold the cone in
position.

Q. 4. A water jet of velocity Vj impinges normal to a flat plate moves at constant velocity (Fig.
4). If the jet density is 1000 kg/m3, the jet area is 3 cm2 and Vj and Vc are 20 and 15 m/s,
respectively. Neglect the weight of the jet and plate and assume steady flow with respect to the
moving plate with the jet splitting into an equal upward and downward direction.

Q.5. The velocity distribution in a two dimensional duct is shown in Fig. 5. Calculate the value
of momentum correction factor.
