Question (2) [15 Marks]
A 5766 c.c., 70-kW constant speed diesel engine was tested at 2800 rpm in atmospheric conditions of 1 bar and 27 C
where it gave the following results at 1/4 load:
Volumetric efficiency = 0.8, mechanical efficiency = indicated efficiency = 0.43
It was also found that the effective efficiency at F.L. is 0.28
If the compression ratio is 16.7, cut-off ratio is 2.23 and calorific value of the fuel is 40.18 MJ/kg, Find:
- The friction power. (3 marks)
- The fuel consumption and excess air factor at no load. (3 marks)
- The s.f.c. and indicated efficiency at half load. (3 marks)
- The m.e.p. and the relative efficiency (based on the standard diesel cycle) at F.L. (6 marks)

Question (3) [25 Marks]


A – Draw the relation between the engine thermal efficiency and the compression ratio for different excess air factor
(), showing the limiting range of operation for S.I.E. and C.I.E. (5 Marks)

B- Describe briefly the optimum shape and design for S.I.E. combustion chamber to resist detonation and higher
thermal efficiency. (5 Marks)

C- Give a short account for the type of turbulence needed for the air movement of the above chamber (small eddies or
large eddies turbulence) and show how to enforce such turbulence with squish hence locate such squish source with
respect to the spark plug, exhaust valve and the inlet valve for the overhead valves 4-stoke S.I.E. (7 Marks)

D- What is the optimum spark advance for S.I.E. has 80 mm bore and 85 mm stroke running at 2000 rpm, giving that
the ignition delay is 1 ms and the flame speed is 40 m/s, when the spark plug is located at the edge of the cylinder?
(4 Marks)
What would be the location of the engine maximum pressure with respect to the T.D.C. when the engine speed is
increases to 2500 rpm and the spark advance remain the same as the previous case? (4 Marks)
