Grade: X Chapter -Light

1) i) Rohit claims to have obtained an image twice the size of object with a concave lens.
Is he correct? Give reason for your answer. (ii) Where should an object be placed in
case of a convex lens to form an image of same size as of the object? Show with the
help of ray diagram the position and the nature of the image formed. (iii) With the
help of ray diagram, illustrate the change in position, nature and size of the image
formed ifthe convex lens in case of (ii) is replaced by concave lens of same focal
length.

2) A convex lens made of material of refractive index n 2 is kept in a medium of refractive index
n1. A parallel beam of light is incident on the lens. Compare the path of rays of light emerging
from the convex lens if (i) n1 < n2 (ii) n1 = n2 (iii) n1 > 1.
3) You are given a convex lens of focal length 30 cm. At what distance from the lens
should you hold a candle flame to observe. (a) a real and magnified image of the
flame? (b) a virtual and magnified image of the flame? (c) a real, inverted and
smallerimage of the flame?

4) Complete the following ray diagram:

a) Find the nature, position and size of the image formed.

b) Use a mirror formula to determine the magnification in this case.

5) The refractive index of ice is 1.31 and that of rock salt is 1.54. Calculate the
refractiveindex of rock salt with respect to the refractive index of ice.
6) Analyse the following observation table showing variation of image distance (a)
withobject distance (u) in case of a convex lens and answer the questions that follow,
without doing any calculations:

(a) What is the focal length of the convex lens? Give reason in support of your answer.
(b) Write the serial number of that observation which is not correct. How did you
arrive at this conclusion?
(c) Take an appropriate scale to draw ray diagram for the observation at S. No. 4 and
find the approximate value of magnification.
7) Explain with the help of a diagram, why a pencil partly immersed in water appears
tobe bent at the water surface.
8) An object 2 cm high is placed at a distance of 64 cm from a white screen. On placing
aconvex lens at a distance of 32 cm from the object it is found that a distinct image of
the object is formed on the screen. What is the focal length of the convex lens and size
of the image formed on the screen? Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the
image in this position of the object with respect to the lens.
9) The image of an object placed at 60 cm in front of a lens is obtained on a screenat a
distance of 120 cm from it. Find the focal length of the lens. What would be the
height of the image if the object is 5 cm high.
10) An object of size 7.0 cm is placed at 27 cm in front of a concave mirror of focal
length 18 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a screen be placed, so that a
sharp focussed image can be obtained? Find the size and the nature of the image.
