Problem Solving
1. If the atmospheric pressure is 101.3 kPa and the absolute pressure at the bottom of the tank in the figure
is 231.3 kPa.

Oil (SG 0.89)

Water

Olive Oil

Mercury

a. What is the specific gravity of the Olive Oil?

b. What is the absolute pressure at the interface of olive oil and mercury?
c. What is the gauge pressure at the interface of the olive oil and mercury?

2. An empty drum (no cover) has a height of 3 m and diameter of 1.6 m. The drum is submerged upside
down in water with its bottom side being 6 m below the water surface. This causes air to be trapped
inside the drum.

a. Find the height of the air contained inside the drum.

b. Find the absolute pressure inside the drum.

3. Piston A has a cross-section of 1,200 cm2 while Piston B has 800 cm2. B is higher than A by 2 m. If their
passage is filled by oil (SG = 0.8) and a 4 kN force is acting on B,

a. What is the pressure at Piston B?

b. What is the pressure at Piston A?
c. What must be the force acting on A to keep this in equilibrium?

F,G as well as the height of the deflection of Mercury at the bottom manometer.

5. Given the figure below, the gate is 1 m wide.

a. What is the hydrostatic force acting on the gate?

b. What is the location of the Force measured from the hinge?
c. What is the volume of concrete (γ = 23.6 kN/m3) needed to hold the system in equilibrium?

0.65 while that of seawater is 1.03. Find the minimum area to support the weight of Jack & Rose. Jack
is 65 kg and Rose is 48 kg.

10. A block of wood with a square cross section of 0.4 m floats in water with 0.2 m of its length projected
above the water surface. If the same block is submerged in oil (SG = 0.8) only 0.18 of its length is
