Abstract—Epilepsy diagnosis usually involves visual inspection of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals

for the stages of epileptic seizures by trained neuro-clinicians. But, the process of manual scrutinization is
very time-consuming and inefficient, especially in the case of long-term EEG recordings. Moreover, due to
the overlapping symptomatology of epilepsy with other neurological disorders and contamination of EEG
signals with artifacts make this procedure very challenging even for an experienced neurophysiologist. This
problem is even more cumbersome when it comes to finding the source of epileptic seizures through EEG.
To avoid the repercussions of delayed- and/ or mis-diagnosis, automated seizure detection has been an
indispensable topic of interest. However, due to various lacunas persistent in the existing methods,
neurophysiologists continue to rely solely on visual inspection. To bridge this gap, current work
accomplished the following set of objectives: 1) to develop robust computing methods for extraction and
selection of optimum features and pattern recognition, and 2) to design novel diagnostic tool for detecting
and localizing seizure signature. Based on the experimental findings, it is established that the proposed
developments made would help in the automated diagnosis of epilepsy and reduce false alarms. These
developments could also serve as a preliminary clinical tool for scrutiny of EEG data in a much more robust,
accurate and computationally efficient manner.

Keywords—Epilepsy; Seizure; Electroencephalogram (EEG); Machine learning.
