3 Synopsis: This course is designed to provide the students some basic understanding about
different statistical methods that are typically used in field of applied sciences.
Students will use the acquired knowledge to solve and analyze data for problems to
be encountered in sciences or any career.
The course covers, History of statistics, Meaning of statistics; Methods of data
collection; Methods of data presentation; Measures of location; Measures of
variation; Moments, skewness and kurtosis; terminologies in probability; Counting
Techniques; definition of Probability (approaches to probability); Probability
distributions; Sampling and Sampling Distribution of the mean and proportion;
Elementary description of the tools of statistical inference: Basic concepts;
Estimation: (Point and Interval) for the population mean and proportion;
Hypothesis testing on the population mean and proportion; Simple linear
regression and correlation analysis.

8 Course Learning Outcome ( CLO): At the end of the course the student will be able to do:

CLO-1 have a broad knowledge of the basic understanding of statistical techniques


demonstrated through principles of data collection, descriptive statistics, linear regression,
correlation, computation and data analysis
CLO-2 Ability to identify different techniques of sampling and understand the methods of data
collection, organization, presentation, analysis and interpretation
CLO-3 the skill to differentiate among common types of data, and summarize and display them
appropriately
CLO-4 Knowledge of some desirable properties of averages and measures of variation
CLO-5 have basic skills in exploratory data analysis and problem solving.
