Assignment No 4 – SPRING SEMESTER – 2024

(COURSE TITLE Power Generation and Plant Operation COURSE CODE EET 559)

Class: BEE (Semester 6 &8) Date: June 6, 2024

Course Instructor: Prof. Dr. Haroon Rasheed Due Date: June 14, 2024
Max Marks: 10
Note: Attempt all questions carry different marks. Marking does not reflect the complexity of the problem.

Problem # 1 (CLO2/PLO3):

In a stage of impulse reaction turbine provided with single row wheel, the mean diameter of the blades
in 1 m. It runs at 3000 r.p.m. The steam issues from the nozzle at a velocity of 350 m/s and the nozzle
angle is 20°. The rotor blades are equiangular. The blade friction factor is 0.86. Determine the power
developed if the axial thrust on the end bearing of a rotor is 118 N.

Problem # 2 (CLO2/PLO3):

A steam turbine receives steam at 15 bar and 350°C and exhausts to the condenser at 0.06 bar.
Determine the thermal efficiency of the ideal Rankine cycle operating between these two limits.

(Hint: Use Steam Table to compute your analysis)

Problem # 3 (CLO3/PLO7):
From the data given below, draw a heat balance sheet for a single-cylinder, four-stroke oil engine.
Cylinder bore = 200 mm
Stroke = 350 mm
Gross mean effective pressure = 7 bar
Pumping mean effective pressure = 0.4 bar
Engine speed = 5 rev/s
Net brake load = 370 N
Brake drum radius = 1.2 m
Fuel used = 3 kg/h
Gross calorific value of oil = 44,000 kJ/kg
Mass of cooling water = 4 kg/min
Rise in temperature of cooling water = 36°C
Mass of air supplied = 1.4 kg/min
Temperature of exhaust gasses = 320°C
Room temperature = 17°C
Mean specific heat of dry gases = 0.75 kJ/kg K
Mass of exhaust gasses = 2 kg/min
Problem # 4 (CLO3/PLO3):
(a)

Cost Nuclear power plant Hydro-power plant Steam power plant

Capital per KW Installed 6000 PKR 4320 PKR 2160 PKR

It is proposed to supply a load with a maximum demand of 100 MW and a load factor of 0.4.
Choice is to be made from nuclear, hydro and steam power plants. Calculate the overall cost per kWh in
each scheme.

(b) An industrial undertaking has a connected load of 220 kW. The maximum demand is 180 kW. On an
average each machine works for 60% time. Find the yearly expenditure on electricity if the tariff is:
Rs. 1200 + Rs. 120 per kW of maximum demand per year + Rs. 0.15 per kWh.

(c)
(i) The monthly bill for a total consumption of 2000 kWh and a maximum demand of 15 kW. Also find out the
unit energy cost.
(ii) Lowest possible bill for a month and a corresponding unit energy cost
