FCE READING PART 5

YOU ARE GOING TO READ AN EXTRACT FROM A NOVEL. FOR QUESTIONS 1-6, CHOOSE
THE ANSWER (A, B, C OR D) WHICH YOU THINK FITS BEST ACCORDING TO THE TEXT.

Jenny half opened her eyes to stare at the glowing numbers of the clock radio on the bedside table.
As it was still dark, she assumed that it was fairly early, but squinting at the clock she realised that
Line it was nearly time for her to get up. She was irritated that the winter darkness had beguiled her into thinking she still
3 had a few hours in bed.

As she turned over, she heard a noise from the other bedroom. The sound bore no relation to the images in the dreams
she was leaving behind as she slowly woke up. Still half asleep, she realised it was the creak of a cupboard door This was
followed by footsteps padding around the room next to hers and then another creak. It was her father opening and
closing his cupboard doors as he prepared for the day. He was always the first one up in the morning. She imagined that
he would already have his tracksuit on and was picking up his trainers, about to put them on. The squeak of the bed as
Line
he sat down confirmed that.
11

Her father was predictable, she thought to herself fondly. The night before he had announced that he was going for his
usual run by the lake, as he did every morning, no matter what the weather or what other people might want him to do
instead. Jenny really admired the fact that he would stick to his plans, whatever obstacles were in his way. He'd do a few
exercises to warm up on the terrace outside the house, and then he'd jog down the winding, tree-lined lane to the
woods, where he would pick up speed before FCE to the lake. He'd run twice around the lake, which at this time would
inevitably be covered in mist, before coming home and having two boiled eggs for breakfast. But first of all, before even
leaving the house, he'd have to find the woolly hat he always wore and fill his water bottle. This procedure would take a
few minutes as he always threw his hat and bottle down on a chair in the kitchen when he came back, but he never
remembered this the next morning and would therefore spend several grumpy minutes looking for them before he set
off on his morning ritual.

Jenny heard her father go downstairs and waited for a few moments while she knew he would be filling his water bottle
and fetching the back door key from a large hook. She then got out of bed, throwing on an old jumper that hung on the
back of the door, in order to fend off the cold that enveloped the big old house at this time of year. She walked over to
the window, and just at that moment, as she had anticipated, her father came out onto the terrace, stamping his feet to
warm them up, his water bottle in his hand. How reassuring this was, in a world which sometimes seemed so confusing!

Jenny's father did his stretching exercises and, after a few minutes, he set off at a jogging speed down the line of leafless
birch trees. As usual at this time of year, his movements were the only sign of life on the country lane as he headed off
Line towards the woods and ultimately the lake. Then Jenny noticed something different. It was the figure of a man, his grey
34 jacket camouflaged by the trunks of the birch trees. Once her father had passed, the man melted out from behind the
trees and started to follow him.

A the fact that her father had already got up

B the part of the house her father was in
C what her father was going to do next

FCE WRITING PAPER

A) PARTS OF THE WRITING PAPER

You have 80 minutes to write two texts.

PART 1
Part 1 of the writing exam is a compulsory essay. In this task the focus is on agreeing or disagreeing
with a statement, supporting your own argument with reasons and examples, clearly stating your
opinion, comparing different opinions as well as drawing conclusions.

PART 2
In the second part of the writing paper you get three options which you have to choose one task from.
There is a variety of types of writing and you will not always get the same options, so make sure that
you are ready for all of them.

1. Article

In an article you should show your opinion or comment on the topic. Your language should be
interesting and engaging and you normally have to imagine that the reader has similar interests as
you, the writer.

2. Email/letter

The email or letter is always a reply to message that you get in the task. You have to ensure that you
respond to everything mentioned in the original message, that your language is appropriate
(formal/informal) depending on the reader, and that you follow the common rules for a letter or email,
for example including a greeting and salutation, etc.

3. Report

You usually have to write your report to either a superior like the director of your college or to peers,
such as your English club. The tone is normally quite neutral and you need to give a factual
description of the topic as well as make recommendations or suggestions.
4. Review

A review is mostly for a newspaper, magazine, newsletter or a similar publication. You should give
your opinion about an experience you have had like a holiday, film, book, restaurant, etc. as well as a
description or explanation of what you are writing about. At the end of the task, you usually have to
include a recommendation of some sort.

B) THE FOUR ASSESSMENT SCALES

When an examiner looks at your writing tasks they mark it by looking at four different categories,
each of which cover one aspect of your writing. The four categories are:

1. Content
2. Communicative achievement
3. Organisation
4. Language

For each part you can get up to 5 marks, so that makes it 20 marks in total. Under each of our four
headings we can group certain smaller criteria.

1. Content

Under Content the examiner checks if you have done what the task asked you to do.

 Did you answer the question completely?

 Is the reader fully informed?

2. Communicative achievement

Here you need to show that you can use the conventions of the task.

 Did you write an essay or does it look more like an article?

 Did you use the appropriate register or is your language too formal/informal?
 Are your ideas clear?
 Is your writing interesting and holds the reader’s attention?

3. Organisation

Organisation is all about…well…organisation.

 Is your text written in paragraphs?

 Are your ideas connected?
 Is there a logical sequence of ideas?

1
4. Language

In the language section you get marked on you ability to use grammar and vocabulary.

 Did you use a variety of grammatical structures?

 Did you try to use more advanced structures as well?
 Did you repeat the same vocabulary all the time or showed a wide range?

2
HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY FOR THE FCE EXAM

An essay is an opinion writing with which we analyse a topic, a situation or an issue from different
points of view, providing different arguments and expressing our opinion about it. For this reason,
an essay must have the following features:

 Purpose: What we usually do with an essay is to analyse and assess a topic, situation or issue
which, in some way, is interesting or controversial. It is normally set as a writing task after a class
debate. In the exam, you have to imagine the debate, obviously.

 Tone and style: Given that you’re writing about a serious or controversial issue, an essay is
written in a formal style, so we must stick to an objective tone and style. Our language must be
formal, thus avoiding words that are simply too common or generic (e.g.: things, stuff, get, etc.) and
contractions (e.g.: can’t, don’t, won’t, etc.).

 Structure: Like every piece of writing, an essay must present a defined structure. For starters, we
can choose either to give it a title or not. Personally, I would say that it is more appropriate to have
an essay with title. Then, the body must be divided into introduction, idea 1, idea 2, idea 3 and
conclusion. This means that, in general, essays must have 5 paragraphs, although it is not entirely
necessary.

 Opinion: There are countless ways of expressing your opinion in an essay, so you must choose
the one that suits you best. However, it is advisable to remain impartial throughout your writing
and give your opinion only in the last paragraph, as a conclusion. But, as I say, it is optional.
The most important thing is that you justify everything you say in your essay.

 Coherence: Coherence is essential in every type of writing, but especially in an essay. As it tends
to be an argumentative text, you must avoid writing incoherent paragraphs that have nothing to do
with one another. Your ideas must follow a logical order and be well connected with
appropriate linkers.

1
FCE WRITING ESSAY EXAMPLE

In the following image you can see the instructions of an essay which involves a typical topic:

In these instructions, we must pay attention to the following:

 The first paragraph introduces the topic: …different ways in which you can protect the
environment.

 In the box, you are given the main topic as a question and they give you something to talk
about: recycle, using bicycles and walking, your own idea. As you can see, you have to
come up with the third idea, something connected to the topic which is not provided in the
exam task.

FCE READING PART 6

YOU ARE GOING TO READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT JOBS THAT INVOLVE INTERNATIONAL
TRAVEL. SIX SENTENCES HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE ARTICLE. CHOOSE FROM
THE SENTENCES A-G THE ONE WHICH FITS EACH GAP (1-6). THERE IS ONE EXTRA
SENTENCE WHICH YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE.

WANT TO JOIN THE JET SET?

You could be jetting off to exotic locations, staying in five star hotels, eating in top-class restaurants, and
it’s all paid for by your employer. Who wouldn’t want a job that involves foreign travel? 1 ………. The
number of jobs requiring international travel is growing significantly. And citing business travel experience
on your CV can bring enormous professional benefits.
But it’s not always as exciting as it sounds. There is a big difference between travelling to Milan as a tourist
and travelling there to spend a day in the type of hotel meeting room that can be found anywhere in
Europe. It can be very exciting, but you need to keep your feet firmly on the ground. Speak to seasoned
international business travellers to get an idea of what you will face. Flights can be delayed, things can go
wrong and it’s easy to get exhausted. Many jobs mean travelling alone, so you can be lonely.

Simply targeting any job that involves foreign travel is not the way to start. 2…………..It’s as illogical as
saying you want a job that involves wearing smart clothes. Instead, you should consider all the usual
factors, such as qualifications and experience, and only then choose a sector or company that offers
opportunities for international travel.
The travel and hotel trades are obvious areas, but the commercial sector also offers good prospects for
travel. In the retail sector, buyers often travel, especially if they work in fresh produce, where they have to
check the suitability of crops. 3 ……….. Jobs in the engineering and environment sector can involve travel,
too. Almost any career can mean international travel, if you choose the right company and role. The
number of jobs involving travel, especially at middle-management level, is growing.
So what will help you secure a role with an international flavour? 4 …………..A second language is a good
indication of how well someone will adapt. You need to show you are flexible and willing to learn. I f your
company has a sister company in the Czech Republic, for instance, learning some Czech will boost your
chances.
Find out what the company offers as a support package. Many now guarantee that you can return home at
the weekends, or they will limit the amount that people travel each year. 5 …………. One company asked
graduates fresh out of university to move to another country over a weekend, alone, and to find their own
accommodation.
And it’s as well to remember that international travel can be stressful. People can get burned out by
international business travel. You need to be in control of your schedule, rather than leaving it to the
company. You must ensure you get time to rest and talk to your employer all the time about how you are
coping. Don’t wait for formal appraisals or until they ask for your views. 6 ………… Most sensible companies
ask people to commit to two to three years. This increases the likelihood of success. And most people who
travel on business remember it fondly.

1
A On the other hand, it does bring personal benefits, and it also has a dramatic effect on
promotion prospects.
В Making travel your first requirement is not the way to choose a career.
C And realize you might not want to travel for ever.
D Employers look for candidates with an international outlook.
E And there are plenty of opportunities.
F But not all employers are like this.
G Employment in communications, banking and finance, and property management is also worth
looking at.

TIME TRAVEL

A CHARLIE
I’d travel back to the year I was born, and live my life again, but only if I could know then what I know now!
I’d love to see my parents and grandparents again. I’d persuade my dad to stop smoking, so that he
wouldn’t die so young. On the other hand, in the present, I have two wonderful grown-up children and two
precious grandchildren. Perhaps the answer is to make the best of the present and stop hankering after
the past. If I could visit other times just for a day, I’d love to meet my parents as children, and go into the
future to meet the great-great grandchildren I’ll not live to see!

B CHLOE
I would not exchange today for any previous era. I have studied a lot of history and whilst I would be
interested in certain eras there would be difficulties. For example, Tudor times – interesting, but as a
Catholic I might have had my head chopped off; eighteenth and nineteenth centuries – exciting, but too
many petticoats to wear, never mind about corsets. Then there is the lack of education and opportunity for
women to consider, and the lack of medical knowledge. No, today is the best time to live. Having said that,
I would not mind the opportunity to take tea with Miss Austen – she would have been enormous fun.

C EMILY
Go back in time? Who’d want that? I mean, as soon as some people spotted you, you’d be the odd one
out. And if you went back in time with all that futuristic equipment on and, for example, the alarm clock on
1
your watch went off, you would be denounced as a devil; tortured, quartered and drawn, and then burnt
at the stake! Travel to the future and you’d be a museum artifact! You’d be seen as some sort of primitive
beast! I’m fine where I am at the moment, thank you. Also, to those of you intending to prevent the
election/birth of various politicians, it won’t work; if you succeeded, then you would have no incentive to
do so, and thus wouldn’t have gone. That’s the paradox.

D JACK
I have always dreamed of being a sailor in the merchant navy between 1920 and 1940. At that time,
travelling to foreign ports like Yokohama, Saigon, Rangoon, Surabaya and such would have been the same
as space travel is today. Imagine coming home after a long voyage, and telling the people in the pub all
about your travels! You’d have such stories to tell! I have seen the majority of the world’s cities now, and
most look exactly the same as each other. If you want to travel somewhere that is still unique today,
without the time machine, see Asia but steer clear of package tours. And hurry; do it now before it all
becomes McDonaldised.

E LIAM
I’d go back maybe about five years and try to do a better job this time. I would never have ended the
relationship with the love of my life. I wish I could’ve known better, and understood then what I
understand now. I would also stay at college. I’d register 250 of the best internet domains possible, so by
now I’d be a billionaire without having done a thing. But I wouldn’t be selfish; I would change the world for
the better with the money. Money can save lives and do unbelievable things in the right hands. Plus, I
would have the girl! Oh well, back to reality.

HOW TO WRITE AN ARTICLE FOR FCE EXAM

An article is a very common type of text nowadays. We can find all kinds of articles in newspapers,
magazines, blogs, etc..

Let’s take a look at the characteristics of an article for FCE Writing Part 2:

 Purpose of an article: The aim of an article is usually to talk about a topic that we like or that
we are familiar with. Besides, one of the features that articles have as opposed to
other FCE Writing tasks is that an article must entertain the reader and, almos always,
recommend the thing we are talking about.

 Language: In general, an article is more informal than an essay, although it will depend on
where it is supposed to be published (an international magazine, a teenage magazine, a
college magazine, an online blog, a newspaper, etc.). However, the most common case is that
we must write a text in an informal or colloquial style. For this reason, our tone must be
relaxed, making use of contractions, phrasal verbs and other colloquial expressions. Besides,
it is recommended to use rhetorical questions and exclamation marks to engage the reader.
You should also address the reader directly in the second person (you, your) and can make
jokes if you think they are appropriate.

 Structure: Articles must always have a title. If possible, this must be catchy and witty so as
to engage the reader. Then, each paragraph must address a single idea, to which you must
add the introdduction and the conclusion, where you are usually expected to make a
recommendation. It is also a good idea to end your article with a rhetorical question, especially
if it is going to be an online article where people could (in theory) leave a comment.

 Giving your opinion: An article is almost exclusively about giving your opinion, so feel free to
do so throught the whole piece of writing. As you are normally asked to write about something
you like or enjoy, opinions are expected to be generally positive. Any article for FCE is usually
a very personal piece of writing, so you can speak in the first person as much as you like. 😊

 Common topics: You may be asked to write articles on a variety of topics: the Internet, health
and fitness, music, plays, hobbies, etc.

 Number of words: you are expected to write your article in 140 – 190 words, no more or
less than any other type of FCE Writing task.

1
FCE WRITING ARTICLE EXAMPLE

Now that we are familiar with the characteristics of an article, the best way to know how to write
an article for FCE Writing is to take a look at an example of an article at B2 level. So let’s see an
example of a task and a sample answer to that very same task.

It is extremely important to read the instructions carefully, as you are supposed to obtain all the
information you need to write the article. In this case we can see the following:
 Where our article will be published: a local magazine

 Topic: their favourite things about the Internet

 Main ideas: things you do with the internet, recommend a website

And that’s exactly how we will organise our article, knowing exactly what to talk about in each
paragraph.

YOU ARE GOING TO READ AN EXTRACT FROM A MAGAZINE ARTICLE ABOUT

ATTITUDES TOWARDS REALITY TV. FOR QUESTIONS 1-8 CHOOSE THE CORRECT
ANSWER (A-D) WHICH YOU THINK FITS BEST ACCORDING TO THE TEXT.

Today's university students have none of the fear of "Big Brother" that marked their parents' generation. In
fact, their fascination with the notion of watching and being watched has fuelled a dramatic shift in
entertainment, programming and ushered in the era of Reality Television.
Mark Andrejevic, an assistant professor of communication studies, says a number of factors including
technology and economy paved the way for the rise of reality television, but none so much as a
transformation of Americans' attitudes towards surveillance.

As a graduate student at the University of Colorado in the mid- to late 1990s, he studied the ways in which
new technology allowed viewers to move from the role of passive media consumers to active participants.
’I was interested in the ways that the promise of participation also became a means of monitoring paople,"
he says. "All over the Internet people were providing information about themselves that could be used by
marketers. Being watched became more and more economically productive."

Andrejevic believes that the interactivity of the Internet paved the way for reality TV mania. He
interviewed producers of early reality programmes such as MTV’s The Real World who said that they
initially had a hard time finding people willing to have their lives taped nearly 24 hours a day for several
months. That was 1992. Now they hold auditions in college towns and thousands of young people form
lines snaking for blocks just for the chance to audition. “There are now more people applying to The Real
World each year than to Harvard” Andrejevic says.

The key to that success is connected to people’s increasing comfort with levels of surveillance that were
once hated in American society. Andrejevic has attempted to think about the ways in which reality TV
reconfigured public attitudes about surveillance. He says: We’re trained to make a split between private
and public surveillance - to be worried about government surveillance but not private, which is
antertainment or gathering information to serve us better. We’re moving into a period where that
distinction starts to dissolve. Private surveillance is becoming so pervasive that it's time to start worrying
about it as a form of social control.’

That viewers of reality programming don’t worry about surveillance or social control is testamemt to the
power of television as a messenger. Andrejevic points out that 'be cast members on these shows are
constantly talking about how great the experience is and how much they have grown personally because
of it. It connotes honesty - you can‘t hide anything about yourself if you're on camera all day eyery day. It
becomes a form of therapy or almost a kind of extreme sport- how long can you withstand alowing
yourself to be videotaped?”

1
Viewers believe in the benefits cast members describe and crave that opportuny for themselves. In this
way each programme becomes a kind of advertisement for itself. Millions of university students watched
The Real World and then began clamouring for the opportunity to participate. The same is true for newer
programmes including Survivor, American Idol, Fear Factor and the like.

Andrejevic says he encourages his students to look beyond the characters and the surface glamour of
reality television and consider the broader issues of surveillance, privacy, democracy and technology that
the shows present.

‘I try to cure my student of the habit of watching reality TV uncritically,“ he says. 'The challenge of
teaching popular culture is that students are trained to separate the world of academics from the world of
popular culture. They tend not to think of that part of life using theories thay have learned in class. There is
a tendency with students to say 'you’re reading too much into it.' But TV is so powerful in conveying
messages about the world precisely because people don't think it's doing that. There’s something so vital
about reality TV as a cultural form," he continues. 'It's always changing, moving so fast, continuously
reinventing iitself. It gloms on to cultural trends. It's a good place to examine and impact our culture."

REVIEW SAMPLE:

An international arts website is looking for reviews of novels for a new section called ‘A
Reader Writes’. You have decided to write a review of a novel you’ve recently read for this
section. Describe the novel and say what you think about it. Would you recommend this
novel to other people?

Write your review in 140- 190 words in an appropriate style on the separate answer sheet.

I really enjoyed the film version of The Bourne Identity starring Matt Damon, but I thought
the original novel by Robert Ludlum was even better. This book is so well-written, I didn’t
want to finish it!

The plot is gripping right from the start. When we first meet the lead character, Jason
Bourne, he is being rescued from the sea. His identity is a mystery to everyone, including
himself! Over the course of the novel we gradually find out who Bourne is, and follow him
through a series of exciting adventures.

As well as a highly original plot line, the novel includes a number of fascinating characters,
especially the villains! I only have one negative -comment: in my view, the novel is strong
on action but weaker on description. However, this is a small criticism of an otherwise
excellent book.

I would highly recommend The Bourne Identity to anyone who enjoys action or crime
stories. However, if you prefer more descriptive or romantic novels, then you should give it
a miss. Personally, I can’t wait to start reading the sequel!

After returning from there when I asked him to return that treasure, he is denying everything."
Shyam said, "No, Your Majesty! You can check my house, Ram never gave me his treasure. He is lying."
Akbar told his soldiers to check Shyam's house in the evening. The soldiers did not find anything. On the
next day Akbar said, "We could not find anything in Shyam's house. So, Ram must be lying." Birbal, Akbar's
intelligent courtier said, "Your Majesty! Give me a chance to solve this case. Actually, I have found the
treasure and I have kept in my house. I will submit it in your court tomorrow." All were surprised to hear
this. When the court was dismissed Birbal asked the royal soldiers to follow Shyam in disguise.
Shyam went home and after sometime he came out. He went into a deep forest and dug a place near a big
tree. He took out a huge bag in which there were the lost ornaments. Immediately, the soldiers arrestesd
him. They produced him in the court before Akbar. Birbal said, "Your Majesty! I did not find the lost

return this treasure to Ram." Some objectives may be both adjective of quantity and adjective of number

YOU ARE GOING TO READ A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ABOUT A MOTHER WHOSE TWO
CHILDREN ARE DISABLED. SIX SENTENCES HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE ARTICLE.
CHOOSE FROM THE SENTENCES A-G THE ONE WHICH FITS EACH GAP (1-6). THERE IS
ONE EXTRA SENTENCE WHICH YOU DO NOT NEED TO USE.

MOTHER’S FIGHT OVER HOSPITAL ERRORS

A woman, Susanna Rehit, whose two children were both left severely brain-damaged following numerous errors made by
the same hospital, has won a £16 million legal battle against the Health Care Service (HCS) in the UK. Susanna was left
devastated in 1993 when her first child Melanie was born severely disabled at the former St. Mary’s hospital in
Yorkshire. (1)……. . It is a neurological condition that affects movement and co-ordination and is often caused by brain
damage, during or shortly after birth. This unfortunate event left Melanie unable to live independently, work or do any of
the things the rest of us take for granted.
When Mrs Rehit became pregnant with her second child, less than two years later, she was reassured the same mistakes
would not be repeated. (2)……. . When Paul was delivered at the same hospital, identical errors were made, leaving
her son brain damaged and severely disabled like his older sister.
According to Susana’s solicitor, Samantha Reed, Mrs Rehit is the first person to be the victim of two such catastrophic
misconducts. Mrs Reed, who represented the family against the former hospital, was shocked by this unprecedented
situation which clearly was as a consequence of negligence made by the same hospital maternity team.

Recently, after almost 20 years of unpleasant investigation and trials Mrs Rehit has been awarded a multi-million
compensation on behalf of her children. (3)……. . Mrs Rehit’s daughter’s case took much longer to investigate and
conclude because it was so complicate and liability was vigorously debated. HCS spokesperson stated that the
compensation had been agreed with the family which would assist in meeting the children’s current and future care needs
for life. An important factor of this financial settlement is that it will ensure Melanie and Paul receive excellent ongoing
care that will not ever be affected by local or national budget cuts.
Mrs Rehit, who is divorced from Melanie and Paul’s father and has since remarried, said: “My children have been through
so much in their lives and it has been heart-breaking to see them suffer at times due to the injuries they were left with.
However, with the settlement of Melanie’s case I am relieved that I no longer have to worry about what will happen when
I am not here any more. (4)……. . However, it deeply upsets me to think about any other families going through the same
ordeal and having to fight hospital trusts to help children they have failed.”
A third child of Mrs Rehit, Andy, now 15, was born at Park Royal Hospital in London without any complications. (5)……. .
His lifelong ambition is to continue to help disabled people in his working life, after helping care for his siblings at home.
It seems that the case of Mrs Rehit’s children is not the only one. (6)……. . A High Court judge said it was agreed by all
sides that Crystal Smith’s birth at Lincoln’s Hospital in January 2002 had been “negligently mishandled” leaving her facing
a lifetime of dependence and requiring a multi-million payout to support him. The final figure has yet to be settled but
lawyers expect it to be around £15.2 million, making it one of the highest awards ever made by a British court in a medical
negligence case.

1
A But the promise was an empty one.
B He is now training to become a nurse.
C In 2012, the HCS Authority agreed to pay £7 million for Paul’s care and have recently awarded
Mrs Rehit further £9 million for Melanie.
D In 2015 a 13-year-old girl, who was left catastrophically disabled by being starved of oxygen
during her birth, is expected to receive almost £15 million in damages from the HCS.
E However Susanna is an incredible mother who has dedicated her life to caring for Melanie and
Paul and has conducted herself with great dignity throughout their cases.
F After she was starved of oxygen at birth, Melanie was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy.
G I feel at ease knowing that both will have access to the specialist care they need and deserve.

HOW TO WRITE AN INFORMAL EMAIL FOR FCE WRITING

An email is an example of an interactive writing, which means that we are writing to someone rather
than just for someone to read. For this reason, emails and letters are a very particular type
of writing for FCE in comparison with essays, articles, reviews or reports. So let’s take a look at
the main characteristics of emails:

 Purpose of an informal email: The purpose of an informal email will depend on each task.
Some tasks ask you to provide your friend with some important information, while others might
ask you to ask for some advice. It is common for a friend or relative to ask you something
about the place where you live, while saying that they will be visiting soon.

 Language: Given that we are writing to a friend or close relative, our language will be
relaxed and friendly. We could call it informal language if you want. So we will be making use
of contracted forms, common phrasal verbs, colloquial expressions and even flexible
punctuation (E.g.: using em dashes «–»)

 Structure: One of the cool things about emails is that they always follow the same
structure. In general terms, we always need an opening and a closing formula; an
introductory and closing paragragh; and the body, which will consist of as many
paragraphs as ideas you are asked to discuss.

 Common topics: Many informal emails to friends and relatives deal with giving advice on a
certain subject, such as visiting your hometown, keeping fit, advice on which cities to
visit in your country, organising a party for a mutual friend, etc. Sometimes, these topics
may appear in combination.

 Number of words: like all FCE Writing tasks, informal emails should be written in 140 – 190
words.

EMAIL EXAMPLE
Now that we are familiar with the characteristics of an informal email for First (FCE) Writing, let’s
take a look at an example of an informal email at B2 level, both at the task and at a sample
answer.

1
It is extremely important to pay careful attention to these instructions, because it is here where we
have to find out what to talk about in our email. For example, in this case we have the following:
 The addressee: an English friend of yours
 The context: is visiting your city next summer
 The main ideas/paragraphs: tell him about the places he should visit / and the clothes /
invite him to stay with you

And that’s how you know what you have to write about.

If we take a quick look at the email above, we can see the following features:

 The email layout is extremely clear. This is easily achieved by using opening and closing
formulas and paragraphs, a signature, and allowing some space between all the semi-
independent paragraphs.

 Each paragraph has a clear purpose, which in this case is marked in red.
a. The opening and closing formulas are used to say «hi» and «goodbye» in a polite way.
b. The introductory paragraph is typically used to react to news (It’s great to hear from you…
/ I’m so excited about...) and to introduce the topic of our email.
c. The main body deals with each of the sub tasks, which in this case are: what to visit, what
to wear and invite him.

2
d. In the closing paragraph we start saying goodbye and we can ask for a reply to our email.

 The language is informal:

a. Contractions: It’s great, I’m, you’ll have, etc.
b. Common phrasal verbs: put you up, check out.
c. Colloquial language: How are you doing?, you should totally, you can’t miss, drop me a
line, etc.
d. Writing as we think: Oh, By the way, Anyway,
e. Flexible punctuation: …viewpoint – you’ll have the best…

USEFUL EXPRESSIONS FOR AN INFORMAL EMAIL

expressions ready to use. Some of these useful expressions are the following:
