LAB REPORT #1 (RESIT)

Guidelines:

 Your lab report should answer ALL questions listed below.

 You should use the data of your group to answer the questions.
 Submit the lab reports online as a Word document through Turnitin (the submission link can
be found in Assessment submission area on Blackboard).
 Deadline for submission: Friday 5th April at 23:59pm.

Questions for lab report #1. Please show calculation process in your answer.

Q1 (20 marks). Calculate the pH of a solution containing 0.1 M of NaOH. Compare the calculated
results with the measurement obtained from the practical.

Q2 (30 marks). Calculate the pH and the concentration of the ions H+ and OH- of a 0.1 M NH4Cl
solution given the value of Ka for NH4+ is 5.6 × 10-10 . Compare the calculated results with the
measurement obtained from the practical.

Q3 (50 marks). In the practical we made a buffer solution containing NaHCO3 (0.0125 M) and
Na2CO3 (0.0875 M). We then adjusted its pH to 9.0. Please answer the following questions:

1) (10 marks) Identify the acid-base conjugate pair in this buffer that resists the change of pH
(use chemical equations to help your answer)
2) (10 marks) Calculate the pH of the buffer solution (Ka = 5.6 x 10-11) before we made any
adjustment. Compare the calculated results with the measurement obtained from the
practical.
3) (10 marks) how does the buffer solution resist the change of pH if NaOH is added? (use
chemical equations to help your explanation)
4) (10 marks) how does the buffer solution resist the change of pH if HCl is added? (use
chemical equations to help your explanation)
5) (10 marks) If the buffer could resist the change of pH, why could we then be able to adjust
its pH from the initial value to 9.0?
