Study: Two or Three Coffees a Day Best for Mental Health

Coffee is said to be the world's most popular drink after water — about 2 billion cups are
drunk every day. Many of us find it hard to do our work or other daily tasks without at
least one cup of the aromatic, caffeine-rich drink.

For coffee lovers who drink moderate amounts, scientists have good news. New
research suggests that people who drink two or three cups of coffee each day are less
likely to have mental health problems.

Researchers found a link between coffee drinking and mental health in a study of
150,000 people in the UK's Biobank data set.
About 80% of the participants drank coffee and 40% of them drank two or three cups a
day, the researchers said in Psychiatry Research.

In the study, those who drank two or three coffees a day — especially ground coffee,
milk-coffee or unsweetened coffee — had a lower risk of depression and anxiety than
people who drank no coffee.

But drinking more than six cups of coffee a day seemed to bring a higher risk of mental
health problems.

The researchers said their findings support the idea that moderate coffee drinking
"could be part of a healthy lifestyle to prevent and manage depression and anxiety in
the general population."
Previous studies have shown that caffeine can affect people's mental health. And other
studies have found that moderate coffee drinking could be linked to physical and
mental health benefits.

US government scientists say there is a "wide variation" in how caffeine affects people
but it "can be part of a healthy diet for most people."

The US scientists suggest healthy adults should not have more caffeine each day than
the average amount in five to six cups of coffee.
