GENERAL WARNINGS

Operators must read this manual before operating the equipment. This manual should be kept near the
equipment for reference and periodically reviewed by all personnel who will come into contact with it.
Use of this equipment requires highly trained personal; unskilled or unsafe operation may cause serious
injury, death, or damage to assets. Familiarity with this manual should not be assumed to take the place
of proper training, experience, and procedures.
This equipment uses high pressure hydraulics to control the payout winch’s rotation. Installation of
hydraulic system must be completed by highly trained personal and tested thoroughly. Loss of hydraulic
pressure can cause the payout winch to become inoperable or perform with insufficient line force.
The payout winch is designed to operate under specified hydraulic pressures. Never exceed the specified
hydraulic pressure and flow rates.
Never use wire rope with broken strands. Replace wire rope if damaged.
Do not use knots to secure or attach wire rope to the drum or load.
Maintenance and inspection procedures must be routinely completed to ensure that equipment continues
to function as intended. Maintenance and inspection intervals recommended by MTI may not be sufficient
if equipment is operated in a dirty or contaminate environment. End user should incorporate an inspection
and maintenance plan that fits the nature of their application.
Equipment has moving parts that could cause serious injury if fingers or limbs are caught. Do not operate
the winch with modified or removed guarding. Keep personnel a safe distance from equipment when in
operation.
Remove equipment from hydraulic power source prior to service.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Equipment is purposely designed to mount onto the hydraulic workover unit that the payout winches were
shipped with. Mounting on other equipment or at non-designated mounting points must only be done in
consultation with an engineer from MTI.
To install the payout winch circuit, connect all pressure and return hoses as per the hydraulic schematic.
The payout winch circuit is part of the gin pole circuit which runs from one Parker Mobile Series Vane
pump. This pump can produce 21 gpm and 3,000 psi at 1,800 rpm. Selector valves are used to select oil
delivery to either the setup winch and gin pole lock or the payout winch and heavy winch. Only one set of
these operations can be run at a time. The mechanical brake is a spring-applied, pressure release friction
brake that is connected with a shuttle valve to the “jack-down pilot signal”. This connection must be made
as per the overall HWU schematic, or else the payout function will n
Over pressurizing is protected against by a RPGC-LAN relief valve. The user might need to adjust the
flow control valve on the power tongs. The relief valve settings can be changed to accommodate tong or
rotary table requirements. The payout winch pressure adjustment is done inside HAWE DCV (V180026-5)
and is controlled with a remote adjustment (RBAE-LAN) pilot valve in the control panel.

PAYOUT LOAD
The payout load is defined as the line tension on the bare drum of the winch that will release the hydraulic
load holding and allow the drum to pay out if the mechanical brake is disengaged. The default payout
load is 1000lbf. Payout load can be adjusted to between 500 lbf and 1200 lbf, but this adjustment should
only be done at factory. Note that a rapid overload event that causes the winch to payout will result in a
brief line tension load spike up to 2x the payout load setting. It is recommended to keep the working load
less than 75% of the payout load setting. MTI supplies the payout winch pre-configured for the designed
workover equipment. The end user accepts all responsibility for any damage or injury which may occur
from altering factory settings.
NEVER adjust the payout load while the winch is holding a load. Doing so could result in a catastrophic
dropping of the load.

DISASSEMBLY/REASSEMBLY
***CAUTION! Improper disassembly/reassembly can cause serious damage or loss of function to
equipment. This could result in serious injury, loss of life, or damage to assets. Do not attempt without
proper training and experience. If in doubt, contact MTI to arrange for factory maintenance***
Always wear correct PPE when handling, disassembling or reassembling the payout winch and payout
winch sub-assemblies.
Note that any damage or deficiency identified during or caused by assembly/disassembly must be fully
corrected prior to returning equipment to service.
Refer to Appendix A and Appendix B for a detailed summary of how to assemble the payout winch.

INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
The table below outlines the recommended inspection and maintenance procedures. Maintenance and
inspection procedures must be routinely completed to ensure that equipment continues to function as
intended. Maintenance and inspection intervals recommended by MTI may not be sufficient if equipment
is operated in a dirty or contaminate environment. End user should incorporate an inspection and
maintenance plan that fits the nature of their application.
