Laboratory Activity 11

OXIDATION - REDUCTION REACTION

Objectives:
To investigate and comprehend the REDOX reaction involving iron (Fe) fillings
and copper(II) sulfate solution, aiming to gain insights into electron transfer processes and
chemical changes.

Materials:
Iron (Fe) filings
Copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4) solution
Beakers
Watch glass
Triple beam balance
Alcohol lamp

Procedure:
1. Weigh 1.00 gram of iron filings and place it in a 100 mL beaker
2. Measure 30 mL of 1.0 M CuSO4 solution by using a graduated cylinder. Pour this
solution into another 100 mL beaker, and heat gently to almost boiling.
3. Slowly add hot CuSO4 solution to the beaker that contains the iron filings.
4. Observe and document any observable changes in the reaction mixture.

Guide questions:
1. Why the reaction between Fe and CuSO4 is an example of a redox reaction?
2. What are the products of the reaction of Fe and CuSO4?
3. What is the balanced redox reaction of Fe and CuSO4?
4. What is the balanced oxidation and reduction half- reactions from the redox
reaction above?
