ABSTRACT
Automotive maintenance and repair often require mechanics and technicians to work in confined
spaces under vehicles. Traditional creeper boards, used to provide a comfortable and mobile
platform for these tasks, can be expensive and may not meet the specific needs of individual
users. This research project aimed to design, construct, and evaluate the performance of a DIY
(Do-It-Yourself) wooden creeper board that can be customized to suit the user's requirements and
budget.
The design process involved analyzing the ergonomic needs of automotive technicians,
identifying the key functional requirements, and developing a modular and adjustable creeper
board concept. The construction phase utilized readily available materials, such as plywood,
hardwood, and casters, to fabricate a prototype that was both durable and cost-effective.
To assess the performance of the DIY creeper board, a series of tests were conducted in a real-
world automotive repair shop environment. These evaluations focused on factors such as
stability, maneuverability, comfort, and overall user satisfaction. Feedback from experienced
technicians was collected and used to refine the design and improve the functionality of the
creeper board.
The results of this research project demonstrate the feasibility and potential benefits of a
customizable DIY wooden creeper board for automotive maintenance and repair tasks. The

Statement of the Problem
Automotive maintenance and repair often require technicians to work underneath vehicles, which
can be a physically demanding and potentially hazardous task. Commercially available creeper
boards, designed to provide a comfortable and stable platform for technicians to lie on while
performing tasks underneath a vehicle, can be prohibitively expensive, especially for home
mechanics and do-it-yourself (DIY) enthusiasts who may only require such a tool occasionally.
The high cost of commercially produced creeper boards has led to a growing need for a cost-
effective, homemade alternative that can be constructed using readily available and inexpensive
materials. While some DIY solutions have been explored, there is a lack of comprehensive
research and documentation on the design, construction, and performance evaluation of a DIY
The problem this study aims to address is the limited accessibility and affordability of creeper
boards for home mechanics and small automotive repair shops. By designing, constructing, and
evaluating the performance of a DIY wooden creeper board, this research seeks to provide a
practical and cost-effective solution that can meet the functional requirements of automotive
maintenance tasks, while also empowering individuals to create their own customized creeper
boards.
By developing a DIY wooden creeper board that is both affordable and effective, this study aims
to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on DIY automotive tools and equipment,
potentially inspiring further innovation and the creation of even more accessible solutions for the

11
A creeper is a low-profile tool used to help a person more easily slide in and out of confined
spaces, such as the underside of a car, for performing inspection or maintenance.[1] Other names
for such devices include car creeper, garage creeper and mechanic creeper. They are built with a
low profile to reduce the amount of added height above the ground, thereby providing as much
clearance as possible for the person lying on it.
It is usually a wheeled platform constructed using a stiff frame and wheels.[2] Some also have
ergonomic shapes or cutouts for the arms and shoulders providing extra room to make it easier to
work in the confined space. Other types of creepers include specially designed mats (creeper
mats), and there are also various improvised solutions such as lying on cardboard.[3] The
alternative to using a creeper is often lying directly on the ground, which gives added clearance,
but can make it more difficult to get in and out due to friction against the ground. [4] Some
creepers have dual-uses, such as being able to be folded to make a chair or a stool, or for
compact storage. Some also have the ability to recline the headrest somewhat while in the lying
position.[5]
Creeper boards, also known as mechanics creepers or garage creepers, are low-to-the-ground
platforms on wheels that allow mechanics and technicians to easily access the underside of a
vehicle while working on it. They provide a comfortable and convenient way for the user to slide
under a car or truck without having to lie directly on the floor.
Several studies have examined the ergonomic benefits and practical uses of creeper boards in
automotive repair and maintenance settings. One study published in the International Journal of
Industrial Ergonomics found that using a creeper board significantly reduced lower back muscle
activity and spinal compression forces compared to lying directly on the floor. This suggests
creepers can help prevent back strain and fatigue during prolonged under-vehicle work.
Another study in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene evaluated different
creeper designs and found that models with larger wheels, adjustable heights, and padded
surfaces were preferred by mechanics in terms of comfort, stability, and ease of use. The
researchers recommended specifications for optimal creeper board ergonomics in the workplace.
Literature also discusses the safety considerations around creeper boards. Proper training on how
to correctly get on and off the creeper, as well as securing it to prevent unexpected movement,
are emphasized as important to prevent falls or crush injuries. Some studies have looked at
incorporating features like safety straps to further enhance the stability and safety of creeper
boards.
Overall, the available research indicates that creeper boards can provide meaningful ergonomic
and productivity benefits for mechanics and technicians performing underbody vehicle work,
when used properly and with the right design specifications in mind. They are considered an
important tool in the automotive repair industry.

Procedures
1. Gather the materials: You'll need a sheet of plywood or MDF (medium-density
fiberboard), hinges, screws, and a saw.
2. Measure and cut the plywood: Determine the desired size of your creeper board, typically
around 16-24 inches wide and 48-60 inches long. Use a saw to cut the plywood to the
desired dimensions.
3. Create the fold lines: Measure and mark the fold lines on the plywood. Typically, you'll
want to create three equal folds, resulting in a board that can be folded into three sections.
4. Score the fold lines: Use a utility knife or a scoring tool to lightly score the fold lines on
the plywood. This will make it easier to fold the board later.
5. Attach the hinges: Position the hinges along the fold lines, ensuring they are evenly
spaced. Secure the hinges to the plywood using screws.
6. Fold the board: Carefully fold the plywood along the scored lines, using the hinges to
create the three-section folding mechanism.
7. . Test the folding: Unfold and fold the creeper board a few times to ensure the hinges are
working properly and the board folds smoothly.
8. Optional: Add padding or cushioning: For added comfort, you can attach a layer of foam
or upholstery material to the top of the creeper board.
