INDUSTRIAL DRIVES AND APPLICATION
Time: 1 hr. 30 min. Max.Marks: 50

Note: Answer any FIVE full questions, choosing at least one from each part.
All Questions Carry TEN marks.

1. (a) Explain in brief different types of starters. Explain Auto-transformer

starter.
OR
(b) Explain in brief 1) High slip induction motor 2) Deep – bar, Double
squirrel – cage Rotor Induction Motor.

2. (a) Explain AC dynamic braking of 3 phase induction motor with 1) two

lead and 2) three lead connections.
OR
(b) Describe the operation of Induction Motor operating with unbalanced
voltages.

3. (a) A 440 V, 50 Hz, 6 pole, 950 rpm, Y- connected Induction Motor has
following parameters referred to the stator. Rs=0.5 Ohm, Rr’ =0.4 Ohm,
Xx=Xr’=1.2 Ohm, Xm=50 Ohm. Motor is driving a fan load, the torque of
which is given by TL=0.0123 . Now one phase of the motor fails.
Calculate motor speed and current. Will it be safe to allow the motor to run
for long period?
OR
(b) What is single-phasing? Why should it be avoided?

4. (a) Explain the plugging of an induction motor.

OR
(b) Derive expressions for time required to stop the induction motor by
plugging when running at synchronous speed.

5. (a) Describe the operation with unbalanced rotor impedances.
