Objectives

In conducting this experiment, there are objectives that the group members are aiming
to achieve.

1. Students will understand the phenomenon of partial pressure as it relates to the

inflation of balloons when gases are combined, contributing to the overall
pressure in the experiment.
2. The students will gain knowledge about the connection between the experiment
and Dalton's Law, enhancing their understanding when it comes to gas behavior.
3. Students will recognize the significance of precise ingredient amounts in
achieving the collaborative effect necessary for inflating balloons during the
experiment.

Materials

In starting this experiment, the members were required to obtain materials in order to
conduct the experiment. The members mostly used recycled and reused materials from
their household.

Material Quantity

Baking Soda 227 g(1 pc)

Vinegar 200 ml

Bleach (Zonrox) 100 ml (2 pcs)

Agua Oxigeneda 120 ml (2 pcs)

Balloons 4 pcs

Water Bottles 4 pcs

To start the experiment, pour the right amount of vinegar into the water bottle. Start
pouring the baking soda into the empty balloons.

Stretch the mouth of the balloon and place it around the top of the bottle.

Once the baking soda starts to mix into the vinegar, it will form carbon dioxide gas that
will cause the balloon to inflate and expand.

The pressure that each gas would go through if it were to occupy the same
volume in the mixture at the same temperature on its own is known as the partial
pressure. The differences in the atmospheric composition of particular gases at various
altitudes are explained by Dalton's law. One example of Dalton’s Law of partial
pressures experiment is when vinegar is mixed with baking soda. When vinegar and
baking soda are combined, it would produce carbon gas. The balloon starts to inflate as
the gas in the bottle starts to expand. Bubbles of carbon dioxide are also produced in
the vinegar. These bubbles will then rise to the surface, which will produce a mixture of
carbon dioxide and water vapor above the mixture. This will then lead to the balloon
inflating. The more gas that is created, the larger the balloon will inflate.

This experiment is relevant to chemistry because it demonstrates Dalton's law. It

states that the total pressure of a gas mixture is equal to the sum of the partial
pressures of each individual gas in the mixture. How they collaborate to get the overall
pressure inside the balloon and the bottle with the materials used makes it relevant as it
shows how chemical reaction happens. The use of balloons to measure the volume of
each gas in the mixture provides a clear visual representation of this concept. Adding all
the partial pressure to get the total pressure plays a big part in making the balloon
inflate. Additionally, it easily facilitates knowledge about how gas mixtures react during
chemical reactions. This experiment is commonly used in introductory chemistry
courses to help students understand the behaviour of gases. In relation to chemistry,
this emphasizes the critical role of stoichiometry. It is the relationship between reactants
and products in chemical reactions. In the context of this experiment, it becomes
essential to identify first that the success of the experiment depends on the precise
ingredient amounts needed. With accurate stoichiometric calculations, it guides the
experimental procedure to ensure the success rate and proper utilization of reactants.
