1. Electrical System
The electrical system on the SB200 body is a multiplex system supplied by siemens V.D.O.
The multiplex control is based on a central processing unit (CPU), linked to three input/output mod-
ules (nodes), by a closed area network (CAN) communications line.
Each node is identified on the CAN communication line by using external links.
Each node sends input information from the vehicle electrical system ie. dash
switches etc to the CPU via the CAN communications link. The CPU processes the
information from the node inputs and via the CAN communication link switches on
the relevant output I.e. Interior light on the specified node.
The CPU processes the node I/O information using a software program written
on KIBES 2 software by Wrightbus personnel. This program is uploaded to the CPU
using a notebook PC via an RS232 communications link. The PC can also be used as a
real-time diagnostic tool by monitoring system functions on line.
The body electrical system is situated at three locations on the vehicle.
The main electrical centre (Fig 3) is behind the first off-side roof cove and contains
the CPU, diagnostic socket, CPU wake up board and multiplex node 2B-1.1. This
node controls the majority of functions located on the off-side of the vehicle. eg.
Interior lights, cab roof equipment, heated mirrors etc.
The second location (Fig 4) is in the door head above the Mid-exit door position on Near side
and contains multiplex node 2B-1.2 and an earth junction box. This multiplex node
controls the majority of functions located on the near side of the vehicle. eg. Door
spotlights, ramp functions, door controls etc.
The third location (Fig 5) is above the drivers overhead panel and contains
multiplex node 2B-2.1 & the main fuse board for body electrics. This multiplex node controls the ma-
jority of functions around the cab, dash and front end areas. I.e. Dash switches, ramp demister etc.

3. SIGNAL TYPES
Digital Inputs
A Digital Input can be separated into two types:
1. High Switched (H/S) Digital Input Signal is received from a switch that closes to
+ 24v to activate the signal. The signal is active if the voltage is greater than 66%
of battery voltage, and inactive or dormant if less than this. NB. If a H/S input is
not switched on the pin at the node will float to approximately 12v. (See Fig14)

FIG 11

2. Low Switched (L/S) Digital Input is received from a switch that closes to ground
or battery negative to activate the signal. The signal is active if the voltage is less
than 33% of the battery voltage, and inactive or dormant above this. NB. If a L/S
input is not switched on the pin at the node will float to approximately 12v. (See
Fig15)

Digital Input Configuration.

For program operation it is necessary to assign each input to one of the two types explained
previously i.e. High side or low side.

To designate the input type a three character code is used.

The first character represents the Input logic state when the node receives an input greater
than 66% of Battery voltage i.e. 24 Volts approximately, the second character represents the
logic state when the node Input switch is open and floats to a voltage greater than 33% and
less than 66% of Battery voltage i.e. 12 Volts approximately and the third character represents
the logic state when the node receives an input voltage less than 33% of Battery voltage
i.e. 0 Volts approximately.

For the input type code

1 = Input On
0 = Input Off
E = Input Error

High Side inputs are shown in the table below.

Low Side inputs are shown in the table below.

Digital Outputs
A Digital output can be separated into two types:

1. High Switched (H/S) Digital Output signal is active when it transmits a voltage of + 24v and
inactive when it is zero volts. Outputs have different ratings 10amp, 5amp, 3amp & 1amp
maximum loads, outputs can be linked to provide up to
15amps maximum load. (See Fig17)

FIG13

2. Low switched (L/S) Digital Output signal is active when it transmits a voltage of
zero volts and inactive when open circuit. Outputs have a rating of 1amp. (See

PWM outputs for Saloon Heating and Demister Motor Speed control.

PWM outputs operate at a basic frequency of 20 KHz. Via the program the frequency is
chopped to provide a variable speed signal to the motor controller. The frequency is altered
using a word value ranging from 250 - 0, 250 being motor stopped or 0% and 0 being full
speed or 100%.

4. PROGRAM LOGIC FUNCTIONS
Various logic functions are used in the multiplex program. A brief description and explanation
of the most commonly used ones are given below.
1. 2 Input AND Gate

Truth Table

The number of inputs required can be extended to any number necessary.

2. 2 Input OR Gate

Truth Table

As with the AND gate number of inputs required can be extended to any number necessary.

3. Inverter.

Truth Table

A solid Black Circle may be used on Inputs and Outputs of any module to indicate inversion,
without the need to draw a separate Inverter module.

4. RS Flip Flop
This module can be used in two ways, Set priority and Reset priority. The small square on
the right must be above the centre line for Set to have priority and below the centre line for
Reset to have priority.

Truth Table (Set Priority)

From the truth table for the Set Priority Flip Flop it can be seen that the output is set to 1
when S=1 and this is independent of the Reset State. I.e. X can be either “1” or “0”

©Wright Customcare Ltd - 2005
From the truth table for the Reset Priority Flip Flop it can be seen that the output is set to 0
when R=1 and this is independent of the Set State.

5. Edge Recognition

Truth Table

If at the input a positive-going edge occurs the output gets true for one cycle.

Customcare is the Customer Service Division of Wright Group,Galgorm, Fenaghy Road, Ballymena BT42 1PY, N. Ireland.

©Wright Customcare Ltd - 2005
6. Clock Pulse

The Clock Pulse module causes a signal pulse at the output with the state true for time “t1”
and false for time “t2”, according to what is required.

7. Mono-Flop

When a true state occurs at the monoflop input, the module gives out a pulse for a period of
time “t”. If another positive edge occurs at the input when the output is still high then the
time “t” is set again.

Customcare is the Customer Service Division of Wright Group,Galgorm, Fenaghy Road, Ballymena BT42 1PY, N. Ireland.
Page 19 Telephone: +44 (0) 28 2566 3005 Fax: +44 (0) 28 2563 0518 Web: www.customcare-eur.com Email: info@customcare-eur.com VDL SB200 Pulsar
©Wright Customcare Ltd - 2005
The Time chart (Fig 15) shows how the Output is held high for a time “t” from the time when
the last positive edge was received.

8. Edge-Delay

The Edge delay transfers the state true on the input to the output with a delay of time “t”.
The state false on the input is transferred to the output without delay.

From the time chart (fig19) it can be seen how the true input state is delayed by a time “t”
whereas the state false has no delay.

9. Step sequence
If a sequence of events have to be controlled in a specific logical order a step sequence
facility may be used. Fig 16 shows a typical example of a Flowchart for a step sequence with an op-
tional branch.

The Flowchart for step sequence consists of the following elements.

Step Initialization.

This module is used to initialize the step sequence. At the first cycle this module is automatically acti-
vated and the outputs SO and Activation Output are set true.

Step Module

This module is used in sequence control and serves to activate the actions of a sequence
step. The activation output is set to the state of the signal input (SI). If a positive going edge
occurs at SI then SO is set true.

Customcare is the Customer Service Division of Wright Group,Galgorm, Fenaghy Road, Ballymena BT42 1PY, N. Ireland.
Page 21 Telephone: +44 (0) 28 2566 3005 Fax: +44 (0) 28 2563 0518 Web: www.customcare-eur.com Email: info@customcare-eur.com VDL SB200 Pulsar
©Wright Customcare Ltd - 2005
Transition Module

The function of this module is to start the conditions belonging to the respective sequence
step depending on the state of the preceding step module. The result of the relevant transition
conditions is processed and the input is prepared for the next step module via the
output “SO”. If the Signal Input and the Transition Input are true then a pulse is rendered at
the activation output “SO”.
SO

Optional Branch Module

This module allows an optional branch in a sequence of operations. In this type of branching
all the following branches are initialized via the step module before the branching. The
branch where the transition condition is fulfilled first is selected for further program execution.
Hence the transition conditions can be used to initialize a specific sequence of events.

Optional Junction Module

This module must always be used together with the Optional Branch Module. Several
Branches of a sequence control system are joined and the program continues in one branch
after the junction. To activate the step module after the junction the last step of any branch
must have been performed and the transition condition belonging to the step module after
the junction must be fulfilled. The number of branches can be extended up to a maximum of
24.

5. DIAGNOSTICS
Online Test Diagnostic - When and online test is carried out using a notebook PC all inputs
and outputs are displayed graphically, showing real time status of the entire electrical system.
In addition to this capability the following functions are also used.

Open Load Diagnostic - The output “smart switches” use a diagnostic current to check for
open load faults on the circuit, eg. fused sidelight lamp, in this case a fault input will be
switched on in the program to register that the output is open circuit. This will be logged by
a counter within the program. The fault input will switch off once the circuit is closed, eg.
lamp replaced. This can be used to register intermittent faults eg. lamp loose in holder
flashing on and off. (See Fig 17 for an example of open load fault logging within the program)

Short Circuit Diagnostic - The output “smart switches” will automatically shut themselves
down if a short circuit is detected, eg. frayed cable comes into contact with chassis, switching
themselves on again when the short circuit is removed. A short circuit fault will also switch
on a corresponding fault input which is registered in the same way as an open load fault. (See Fig 17)

External Node Diagnostic - On each node a 2W test lamp can be connected to plug C pin
10 to check the operational status of the node. The lamp will give a blink code ie. flash,
remain on constantly or not illuminate at all depending on node status. (See Fig 22 for explanation
of external node diagnostic)

11.5 Body Electrical CAN J1939 Network EWD-05104

The above diagram shows the Closed Area Network (CAN) system used on the SB200 Body electrical system.
Each of the 3 nodes used has an individual twisted pair connection between their own location and the central
processing unit. The CPU is also linked to the VDL chassis electrics via a twisted pair connection, this is to en-
able the body and chassis to interface various signals between them. These signals are used for such opera-
tions as displaying warning lamps on the VDL dash and also for the VDL system to tell the body multi-plex sys-
tem such signals as gear selected, speed signal etc….. Euro 4 heating systems also have an interface with the
multi-plex system for controlling the water boost pump etc…...

11.6 CPU ZR2BD & K-Line Diagnostic EWD-05105

The SB200 has 2 communication sockets fitted for interfacing with the Body Multi-plex system. One is mounted
on the main electrical centre above the 2nd O/S cove with the second being mounted on the dash at the drivers
left hand side. Both are powered from the same fuse as shown above. The CPU power supplies are also shown
above with the 2 wake up signals required for CPU to operate being shown on the left hand side. These signals
are 24v high sides received from the CPU wake up board mounted beside the CPU. The wake up board is used
to allow the Multi-plex system to shut down when none of its functions are being used. A full description of the
wake up board is shown on next page.

11.7 CPU Wake Up Board EWD-05106

Above shows the wiring of the CPU wake up board. This is an electronic unit which is used to control the start
up and shutting down of the body multi-plex system. The board is located on the main electrical centre above
the 2nd O/S roof cove. The basic principle of the unit is that when it receives an input it will provide a +24v
supply to pin A2 pr A4 of the ZR2-BD CPU and therefore start it up (wake up) If all the inputs are lost then the
wake up signal will be lost and therefore the CPU will shut down. The unit is capable of taking 8 inputs, 4 of
these are H/S 24v signals and 4 are L/S 0v signals (these are shown on left above). As the signals are also
required by the multi-plex system for program operation when the input is received the wake up board will
also forward the input onto the multi-plex system in the form of a L/S input to a node. When an input is active
to the wake up board a corresponding LED will light up on the board to symbol that the input is active. Not all
of the inputs shown are used on all contracts (check system schedule to check which are being used)

11.9 Engine Hatch Switches EWD-05112

The engine hatch switch consists of a roller trip micro-switch mounted on the O/S of the engine bay. When the
engine hatch switch is closed the switch is activated. The SB200 has a plug mounted in the engine bay (BRCB
Plug), with 4 connections, pins 1 & 4 are used to tell the VDL electric system when the rear hatch is open and
prevent starting from the starter switch mounted on the dash. Pins 2 & 3 are used for connection of an addi-
tional emergency stop. This is usually mounted behind the coolant door at the O/S rear of the vehicle. The N/C
side of the hatch switch is used for input to the body multi-plex system for a hatch open signal.

11.10 Hidden Start Switch EWD-05113

The hidden start switch is a optional feature which is used to give an audible and visual warning when the bus
has not been attempted to be started correctly. An additional Britax switch is fitted in the dash area, the wiring
from the VDL starter switch is broken through this. When the switch is not pressed the signal will go to the
multi-plex node as an input and this will cause the horn to sound. If the switch is pressed the VDL starter signal
will travel as normal and cause the vehicle to start if all the appropriate conditions are met.

11.24 Entrance Door Control (see previous EWD-05128)

The front entrance door is opened and closed by the push buttons on the side console (or optional
open footswitch). The door open push button switches a LS signal to the node input 2B-1.2/D9.
Power is applied to the door open solenoid by the node output 2B-1.2/E6 provided the following are
true

1. Speed < 5Kph (VDL CAN signal).

2. Battery master switch is on.

Once the front door is opened the reed switch in the door head switches LS to 2B-2.1/D7 and in turn
activates the door open lamp which is incorporated into the open push button, which is illuminated by
the LS output 2B-1.1/E13.
The door close push-button switches a LS signal to 2B-1.1/D10. Power will be supplied to the door
close solenoid by the node output 2B-1.2/E8 provided that the front door is not in the closed position.

11.25 Mid/Exit Door Control (see previous EWD-05129)

When the Mid exit door open push-button is pressed a LS signal is applied to the node input 2B-1.1/
D11. Power will be applied to the mid door open solenoid by node output 2B-1.2/E2 if the following
conditions are true

1. Speed < 5Kph (VDL CAN signal)

2. Handbrake is on (VDL CAN signal)
3. Battery Master on
4. Exit door override switch Not Activated.

Once the mid exit door is open the reed switch in the door head switches a LS signal to 2B-2.1/D8 via
the CPU wake up board and in turn activates the mid door open warning lamp from the LS output 2B-
1.1/E11. When the mid door is opened the door brake will be activated.
When the Mid exit door close push-button is pressed a LS signal is applied to the node input 2B-1.1/

11.28 Compak Powered Ramp EWD-05132

This ramp is controlled using a Compak ramp controller and signals from the Wrightbus multiplexing system.
When the battery master switch and ignition are on power is applied to the ramp controller from DOT 409
(Node 2B-1.2/B4 & B6). A ramp authorisation signal is required for the ramp to deploy and this is provided by
output 2B-1.2/E1. The ramp authorisation signal is only provided when the handbrake is on, the exit door is
closed (mid door) or open (front door), the speed is less than 5Kph and Ignition is on. When the ramp out
switch is pressed and held a LS signal is applied to 2B-1.1/A21 and the ramp will deploy. Once the ramp is not
stowed, kneeling is inhibited and the door brake is activated. This will prevent the bus from moving even if the
handbrake is taken off. The ramp in switch will retract the ramp by initiating a LS signal to the input 2B-1.1/
A19. When the ramp is operating a buzzer will sound to indicate operation. When the ramp override switch is
activated the ramp controller power is isolated and the ramp can be manually deployed or retracted in the event
of an emergency.

11.30 Heavac Heating System EWD-05134 (continued…………….)

The heating system shown on the previous page details the new Euro 4 system as controlled
by Heavac. On Euro 3 vehicles saloon heating was controlled via the Siemens VDO MUX sys-
tem. On Euro 4 the heating controls and program are all contained within the Aranea
controller which is mounted in the Dash Area.

As can be seen from the wiring schematic the body builder has two interface points with the
system, these are as follows:

1/ Power connection to Heavac loom for providing supply to blowers and water pump
2/ CAN & Wake Up connection to Heavac loom for providing various signals to the Aranea
controller.

(Both these connections are found at top of ‘B’ pillar on O/S of the vehicle)

The demister unit will be standard on all vehicles, this will provide hot or cold air which can
then be independently switched between the front screen and driver. A button can also be
pressed to solely provide a demisting function. This arrangement is the same as Euro 3
Vehicles.

The saloon heating function will come as an option for this heating system. The Aranea con-
troller has two temperature set point controls which the driver can vary to increase or reduce
the saloon temperature. A digital display will show the driver what the saloon set point is.
The Aranea controller will send a PWM signal to the blowers to vary their speed depending
on the desired temperature. If pre-determined by the customer the temperature set point
can be preset by the body builder and the adjustment function disabled to prevent the driver
from varying the temperature set point of the saloon.

11.35 Manual Destination EWD-05139

Power is provided to each sign for illumination purposes. The condition where the light can come on is determined by the program. Most
common is to come on with master switch and sidelights. (see customer specification for correct operation)

11.36 Hanover Destination (LED) EWD-05140

The system consists of 3 signs (front, side & rear) each of which supplied with an battery master feed (varies with contract refer to fuse/node
schedule). A controller mounted in the overhead is connected with each sign via 2-core comms cables as shown. Each sign displays what the
controller is set to. The ERIC version controller has two signals (ignition & reverse as shown). When reverse selected a HS to controller is received
from 1.1/E14 which sets the signs to display ‘BUS REVERSING’. When the ignition is on and is turned off with master still on the controller starts a
15 minute power delay, which when timed out turns the signs off. To reset the master is turned off then on.

Fire system is used to extinguish engine fires and to give audible warnings of engine overheating. The system is supplied with a Battery
Master feed as shown. The engine bay sensors monitor engine bay heat and the system will give a warning to the drivers speaker if over
heat is detected. Other function include pressure detection of bottle, if to low an audible warning will be given through the speaker also. A
fire wire is routed round the engine, when melted the extinguisher will release the foam into the engine bay.

11.46 Klaxon - Maple Attack Alarm EWD-05150

With the battery master switch on, the attack alarm can be activated by operating the switch on the drivers side console. This sets the alarm by
sending a LS signal to 2B-1.1/A15 via the CPU wake up board. The alarm can be reset by putting the switch on the drivers side console back to its
original position, which provides a LS signal to the system. (For push button and foot switch operation the same inputs and outputs are used, only

11.47 Voice-tech Attack Alarm EWD-05151

The alarm is set active by a LS input to 1.1/A15 via the CPU wake up board, this causes the speech unit to be powered up via DOT 366
giving a +24v supply out of 1.1/A18. At same a trigger signal consisting of a HS (1.1/E17) and LS (1.1/E18) sets the speech alarm active
sounding an audible alarm. To reset the system the attack switch is returned to normal state giving a LS signal via DIN 164 into 1.1/A13,
this cuts power to the speech unit.

11.48 Multi-tone Buzzer EWD-05152

The cab multi-tone sounder allows the emergency buzzer and wheel chair cab bell to be incorporated into a single unit. The unit is fed a HS sup-
ply from 2B-1.1/B6, and the emergency buzzer or wheelchair buzzer are sounded depending on a LS signal from 2B-1.1/E5 or 2B-1.1/E3 respec-
tively. See the relevant drawings for the use of the cab emergency buzzer (emergency hammers, emergency door open) and the wheelchair
buzzer (bus stopping).
