Des101 assignment 1:- rough notes

1) Orange juice extractor:-


Aesthetics:
 The stainless steel material imparts a glossy texture look.
 It gives a substantial tone difference giving the product, an eye catching look due to its shine.
 The form of the product gives the body, a sleeker, curvier and smoother look with little to no
sharp edges.
 Minimalist design due to clean lines and abstracted complex features.
 It is limited to just two colours, silver and black, making it look even more simplistic and sober,
thereby not showy.
 Even the shapes of individual components are repetitive giving it a consistent look.
 The side grip creates a contrast as well as emphasis, because of its different colour and
texture, being unique when compared to the whole body.
 The organic shape of the handle and the funnel gives a premium and distinct look.
 The product does not look balanced because of the asymmetry

Functionality:

 The fruit is placed on the funnel. The handle is pushed downwards, which will cause the press
to move down thereby pressing against the fruit, releasing its juice.
 The funnel is designed in such a way that it will retain the seeds and pulp of the fruit, letting
only the juice pass through it.

Accessibility:

 We can use it anytime, anywhere, regardless of the electric supply.


 But, one can extract juice from orange and fruits similar to it (the ones that can be easily
crushed and most importantly, are juicy), thereby being its limitation, when compared to the
electric juicer, which can extract juice from variety of fruits.

Ergonomics:

 The handle has an ergonomic shape in order to accommodate various hand sizes.
 The handle is long enough which reduces the amount of force to be applied, and increases the
torque.
 The funnel has a wide opening to accommodate different fruit sizes.
 The base has rubber feet which ensure its stability during the use.

Storage and longevity:-

 Occupies more storage space than an electric juicer.


 With proper regular maintenance, the chances that this would stop functioning are bleak,
when compared to the electric juicer, which could get damaged due to current overload.
2) Nintendo Wii remote:-

Aesthetics:

 The form of the body gives it a decent look because of its sleek and streamlined designed.
 The simple design has smooth curves and rounded edges.
 Black colour palette is used which makes the product look more sophisticated, thereby
increasing the visibility of the buttons.
 The button layout is minimalist, with only few essential buttons given.
 The organic shape of the remote gives it unique appearance.
 The icon colours on the buttons contrast with the black colour, making them even more
visible.
 The cover of the remote uses repetitive lines which appear to be implied, connecting it end to
end.
 The plastic material used does not give a premium feel.

Functionality:

 It has motion sensing which detects the movements of the user using it.
 It has an IR sensor which enables the user to point at the screen.
 Buttons are used for in-game actions and menu navigations.
 Led lights indicate the battery of the remote as well as the player number.
 Strap attachment avoids accidental drops of the remote.
 Speakers provide immersive sound effects.

Accessibility:

 Motion sensing technology is what made it unique amongst various other gaming console
remotes.
 Strap attachment ensures the safety of remote as well as of the surrounding objects.
 It doesn’t have rechargeable batteries so users have to rely on disposable batteries to
operate.
 The remote can’t operate without the IR sensor bar.

Ergonomics:

 Curved elongated shape makes the remote fit comfortably in the hand.
 Buttons are positioned to be reachable.
 Strap is designed to be adjustable according to the size of wrist.
 Ambidextrous design makes it suitable for left and right handed users.
 Size of the buttons is small which makes the buttons less suitable for bigger hands, causing
pain during the use.

Aesthetics:

 Clean lines impart a sense of contemporary design.


 Patterned speaker grilles become a visual treat.
 Overall matte texture is used which gives it a classy finish.
 Colour palette is limited to just 3 colours with black being more prevalent in order to enhance
the elegance and sophistication of the product.
 Bright orange creates a contrast and adds vibrancy to the speaker.
 A light dark tone gives us depth perceptions at various places of speaker like logo, stand, etc.
 A negative space is beautifully created to give a handle to the speaker.
 Lines and dots are used repetitively for creating decent patterns.
 Organic shapes of its components give an idea of fluid and natural design.
 White colour on the black buttons increase visibility.
 LED lights add dynamic and visually appealing element to the design.

Functionality:

 Press the button with light icon for turning on/off the light and on turning the knob, the
colour of light can be set.
 Press the volume button for pause/play and for setting the volume.
 Any kind of audio could be played.
 It does not have radio functionality so a Bluetooth device is a must.
 It also provides a stand for keeping things like mobile phone.

Accessibility:

 Intuitive to use.
 Wireless, hence does not rely on disposable batteries. It can be recharged.
 Because of it being wireless, it can be placed anywhere inside the room.

Ergonomics:

 Buttons and the icons on the buttons are designed in such a way that it makes the usage more
intuitive.
 One handle may not be enough for some users as the speaker is heavy. 2 handles are needed
so that speaker can get carried easily.

 Graphs are used frequently for presenting the data in visual and lucid manner.

during a particular day.
 The calendar uses repetitive and unified shapes and colours ensuring harmonious visual

 The icons of study plan section uses movement method with respect to the colour.
 Different colours are used to indicating different difficulties of the problem, thereby reducing
the memory load of the user.

 It provides runtime terminal for almost every existing programming language.


 Each problem is categorized with attempted, accepted and wrong answer so that the user can
keep check on the status.
 It has a discuss tab in every problem where users post their solution.
 It keeps the count of number of users who you have beaten with the solution to keep check
on your progress.
 It highlights difficulty and acceptance rate of every problem so that the user can attempt
them accordingly.

 Easily accessed once the user signs up/in.


 It sends notification to the signed in user for keeping the user updated.
 The contest page shows upcoming, ongoing and old contests for up-solving them.
 Errors messages are clearly communicated to the user.
Ergonomics:

 Clean, intuitive and user friendly design.


 It can adapt to various layouts, hence being responsive in nature.
 Code editor interface has syntax highlighting and auto indentation for ensuring smooth and
easygoing experience.
 It has designed its own plagiarism checker in order to avoid any kind of cheating during
contest.
 It sorts problems according to difficulty and acceptance rate.

5) Electric kettle:-

 Compact size makes it suitable for small storage space.
 Only a single button is given which is designed to be intuitive and user friendly.
 LED light indicator creates a beautiful contrast with the entire product.
 An elegant negative space is created to provide a curved handle to the user.
 The button and the lid opener give a sense of emphasis to the user due to its depth difference.
 The handle, base and the lid are given a matte texture for abstaining the slipping of the hands.
 The curvy shapes all around the product give a sense of unity with respect to shape.
 The branding of the company is done in subtle manner without ruining the aesthetics of the
product.

Accessibility:

 Due to its light weight, it makes it easy of lift and portable.


 It provides one-handed operation allowing the user to perform multitasking.
 It automatically shuts off if the temperature increases beyond the threshold of human
tolerance.
 But one can’t use it without electricity.
 It does not have water level indicator which could lead to filling more than needed.
 Limited safety features.

Functionality:

 Use it to boil water as per the need.


 The LED indicator suggests if it is working or not.
 Auto turn off on very high temperatures.
 the heating is done rapidly thereby saving time of the user.
Ergonomics:

 The base is designed to be detachable for easy pouring of the water.


 The handle is made of hard plastic in order to prevent burns due to extreme heat.
 Material used ensures that the content stays warm for longer time period.
 It does not have water level indicator which could possibly lead to overfilling.
 Handle provides comfortable and secure grip and is big enough for accommodating various
hand sizes.
 The exterior design looks inappropriate due to lack of proper insulation.
