Preliminary Activities 1. Review Positive, Comparative, and Superlative forms of adjectives. B. Lesson Proper 1. Preparation Read the following sentences. 1. The king ruled harshly over the lands. 2. He often went hunting in the woods. 3. One night, after he was crowned emperor, he took pride in himself as the greatest. 4. He was beaten up and was thrown outside the palace. 2. Presentation/ Discussion Adverbs of Manner In sentence 1, the word harshly tells how the king ruled over the land. The ending or suffix - ly is added to an adjective to form an adverb of manner or how. What does harshly mean then? It means the king ruled with harshness not with kindness. In sentence 2, the word often tells us to what extent the king went to hunting. In sentence 3, the phrase one night tells when he thought of himself as the greatest. In sentence 4, the word outside tells where the king was thrown. Words that answer questions like how, when, and where are called adverbs. Most adverbs of manner or how adverbs, end with the suffix ly added to the adjectives. ADVERBS OF MANNER Harsh harshly loud loudly Proud proudly fierce fiercely Sudden suddenly easy easily

Generalization A modifier that tell when, where, how, or to what extent is an adverb. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. The suffix ly is added to most adjectives to form adverbs of manner or adverbs that tell how.

4. Fixing Skills A. Choose the adverbs in these sentences. 1. The plane left immediately. 2. We could hear a cracking overhead. 3. We headed straight for the spot of lights. 4. The sound patterns would increase occasionally. 5. Miss Reyes tells her stories cheerfully. 5. Application Pick out the adverbs in each statement. 1. Both girls are equally intelligent to win the contest. 2. He is always willing to share what he has to the needy. 3. Let us talk seriously on how we can help our friend in his dilemma. 4. See the doctor at once when the pain does not stop. 5. Our cousins from the United States will be arriving soon. IV. EVALUATION Read the sentences below and find the adverbs of manner. Write your answers on a piece of paper. 1. Miss Kasilag sings sweetly. 2. Do you know how to brush your teeth properly? 3. My sister dances gracefully. 4. We should speak loudly in the library. 5. My teacher dresses neatly. 6. Myla, my baby sister, sleeps soundly every day. 7. We should chew our food slowly so that we dont get constipated. 8. The boys play merrily in the school court. 9. The children prepare their lessons quietly in the library. 10. Mario tells his story cheerfully. V. ASSIGNMENT Fill in the blanks with the adverb form of the underlined adjective. 1. The children are noisy. They are playing in the yard. 2. Ben is very courteous. He greeted me when he met me. 3. That Boy Scout is very brave. 4. The music is beautiful. He plays his violin . 5.
